Daocheng and Yading
/uploads/allimg/150625/1630433293-0.jpgLocated in the southern part of Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan Province, Daocheng Yading Nature Reserve is one of the most breathtaking destinations on the Tibetan Plateau.
Known as the “Last Shangri-La on Earth” and the “Soul of Shangri-La in China,” Daocheng Yading is famous for its snow-covered sacred mountains, alpine meadows, crystal-clear lakes, colorful forests, and deep Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
The region combines some of the most spectacular landscapes of the plateau, including glaciers, high-altitude lakes, valleys, and untouched wilderness. For many travelers, hiking around the sacred mountains of Yading is the ultimate way to experience the beauty and spirituality of western Sichuan.

Daocheng – A Tibetan Town Surrounded by Wilderness
Daocheng is a small Tibetan town surrounded by vast natural landscapes. With a population that is approximately 96% Tibetan, the county has preserved its traditional culture and lifestyle despite its increasing popularity among travelers.
The town is surrounded by:
* Snow mountains
* Highland lakes
* Alpine grasslands
* Unique glacial landforms
* Tibetan villages and monasteries
For centuries, Daocheng remained isolated from the outside world. Today, it serves as the gateway to Yading Nature Reserve and attracts travelers from around the world seeking untouched Tibetan Plateau scenery.

Tibetan Culture and Historic Monasteries
Daocheng has a long religious and cultural history, reflected in its many Tibetan Buddhist monasteries.

Yangteng Gompa (Xiongden Monastery)
Built during the Ming Dynasty, Yangteng Gompa is the most important monastery in Daocheng.
The monastery houses:
* Thousands of Buddhist scriptures
* Numerous Buddha statues
* A precious sandalwood statue of Sakyamuni Buddha
It remains an important center of Tibetan Buddhist culture in the region.

Gonggaling Monastery
Located on the route from Daocheng to Yading, Gonggaling Monastery is famous for its exquisite bronze statue of Maitreya Buddha, which was reportedly presented by the Fifth Dalai Lama.

Rubachaka Hot Spring Village
Built around natural hot springs, Rubachaka Village offers visitors the opportunity to relax in traditional private hot spring baths while enjoying the peaceful Tibetan countryside.

Mount Haizi – A Plateau Wonderland of Lakes
Mount Haizi, meaning “Mountain of Lakes,” is located along the road to Daocheng.
Known as the ancient ice cap of Daocheng, the mountain was shaped by glacial movements and features:
* More than 1,100 alpine lakes
* Strange glacial rock formations
* Vast highland landscapes
The unusual geological scenery makes Mount Haizi one of the most fascinating stops before reaching Yading.

Luorong Yak Farm with snow mountains in YadingYading Nature Reserve – A Sacred Land of Snow Mountains
Located about 110 kilometers from Daocheng town in Yading Village, Yading Nature Reserve is the highlight of the region.
In Tibetan, “Yading” means “the land facing the sun.”
The reserve is centered around three sacred snow peaks:
1. Xiannairi
2. Yangmaiyong
3. Xiannuo Duoji
These mountains are considered sacred protector mountains in Tibetan Buddhism and are deeply respected by local Tibetan communities.
The reserve also features:
* Alpine meadows
* Crystal lakes
* Ancient forests
* Glacial valleys
* Rich wildlife

The Three Sacred Mountains of Yading

Xiannairi Mountain (6032m)
Xiannairi means “Bodhisattva” in Tibetan and is the northern peak of the three sacred mountains.
Its shape resembles a seated Buddha on a lotus throne, holding a sacred vase and surrounded by clouds.

Yangmaiyong Mountain (5958m)
Yangmaiyong represents Manjusri Bodhisattva, the symbol of wisdom in Tibetan Buddhism.
It is considered the most beautiful of the three sacred mountains, with its sharp snow-covered summit rising above the surrounding valleys.

Xiannuo Duoji Mountain (5958m)
Xiannuo Duoji represents Vajrapani Bodhisattva, associated with power and protection.
Explorer Joseph Rock once described the mountain as resembling a giant bat spreading its wings across the sky.

Famous Scenic Spots in Yading Nature Reserve

Luorong Yak Farm
Located at an altitude of approximately 4,150 meters, Luorong Yak Farm is one of the best places to view the Three Sacred Mountains.
Surrounded by alpine meadows, rivers, and grazing animals, the area offers spectacular scenery.
In spring and summer:
* Wildflowers cover the meadows
* Tibetan livestock graze peacefully
* Snow mountains create a dramatic backdrop
Many hikers choose to camp here to enjoy sunrise and sunset views over the sacred peaks.

Milk Lake (Niunai Lake)
Located at around 4,600 meters, Milk Lake is a beautiful ancient glacial lake beneath Yangmaiyong Mountain.
The lake is surrounded by snow peaks, and its clear blue-green water shines like a jewel under sunlight.
The milky-white deposits around the lake edge give it its name.

Five-Color Lake
Located between Xiannairi and Yangmaiyong mountains at an altitude of about 4,500 meters, Five-Color Lake changes colors according to sunlight conditions.
The Tibetan name is Mudicuo.
Local traditions believe the lake has spiritual power and can reveal the past and future.

Pearl Lake
Known as Zhuomalacuo in Tibetan, Pearl Lake is often described as an emerald beneath the snow mountains.
Although small in size, the lake reflects the surrounding forests and peaks, creating a peaceful and unforgettable landscape.
