Qiangtang National Nature Reserve
Qiangtang National Nature Reserve landscape TibetLocated in northern Tibet, Qiangtang National Nature Reserve is the largest nature reserve in China and one of the most important alpine wilderness areas in the world. Covering an area of approximately 298,000 square kilometers, the reserve protects vast plateau ecosystems, alpine grasslands and numerous rare species living on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Known as the “Roof of the World’s Wildlife Kingdom,” Qiangtang is home to iconic Tibetan animals including the **Tibetan antelope (Chiru), Tibetan wild ass (Kiang), Tibetan gazelle, wild yak and many other high-altitude species.
The reserve plays a vital role in protecting fragile alpine ecosystems and preserving the unique biodiversity of northern Tibet.

A Sanctuary for Tibetan Antelope
The Tibetan antelope, one of the most distinctive animals of Qiangtang, is famous for its ability to survive in the harsh conditions of the Tibetan Plateau.
For many years, illegal hunting driven by the high value of shahtoosh wool posed a serious threat to Tibetan antelope populations. Before 1996, thousands of Tibetan antelopes were illegally hunted every year.
To protect this endangered species, the Tibet Forestry Department, together with international conservation organizations including WWF, launched large-scale anti-poaching programs and wildlife protection campaigns.
Since then, illegal hunting has been greatly reduced, and the population of Tibetan antelope has gradually recovered thanks to stronger protection measures and improved conservation awareness.

A Vast Alpine Wildlife Kingdom
Driving through Qiangtang National Nature Reserve, visitors can experience one of the last great wilderness areas on Earth.
Alpine grassland landscape of Qiangtang TibetThe endless grasslands and high-altitude plains provide habitats for many rare animals, including:
* Tibetan antelope
* Tibetan wild ass (Kiang)
* Tibetan gazelle
* Wild yak
* Blue sheep
* Other alpine wildlife
In areas such as Nyima County, large groups of wild animals can often be seen roaming freely across the open grasslands. Protected by conservation efforts, many animals show little fear of human presence, reflecting the success of wildlife protection programs.

The Largest Nature Reserve in China
Qiangtang National Nature Reserve is located mainly in Nagqu Prefecture and Ngari Prefecture in northern Tibet.
The reserve includes areas such as:
* Nyima County
* Gerze County
* Gegyai County
* Rutog County
* Amdo County
* Shuanghu Special Administrative District
With its enormous size and untouched landscapes, Qiangtang represents one of the most important ecological conservation areas in Asia.
The reserve protects:
* Alpine grasslands
* Desert-steppe ecosystems

Wildlife Conservation Efforts
Local communities and conservation organizations have played an important role in protecting Qiangtang’s wildlife.
In Nyima County, regular patrols are organized by:
* Local forestry authorities
* Wildlife rangers
* Conservation teams
Patrols are especially strengthened during important seasons, such as winter when Tibetan antelopes gather for mating and early summer when they move to calving areas.
The dedication of local rangers has helped create a safer environment for wildlife and improved the balance between human activities and nature conservation.

Discover the Wild Beauty of Northern Tibet
With endless grasslands, snow-covered mountains and abundant wildlife, Qiangtang National Nature Reserve offers a rare glimpse into one of the world’s most remote natural landscapes.
For travelers interested in wildlife, photography and adventure, Qiangtang provides an unforgettable experience of Tibet’s untouched wilderness and extraordinary biodiversity.
