Napa Lake Nature Reserve
Located near Shangri-La in Yunnan Province, southwest China, Napa Lake Nature Reserve (Napahai Wetland) is one of the most beautiful high-altitude wetlands on the Tibetan Plateau. Surrounded by mountains and vast grasslands, the reserve is famous for its spectacular plateau scenery and rich birdlife.
Covering an area of approximately 3,125 square kilometers, with an elevation of about 3,266 meters above sea level, Napa Lake is the largest grassland and an important seasonal wetland ecosystem in Shangri-La.
The combination of snow-capped mountains, open meadows, wetlands and traditional Tibetan landscapes creates a breathtaking natural scene often described as the “Shangri-La paradise.”

A Paradise for Black-Necked Cranes
Napa Lake Nature Reserve was established mainly to protect the rare and endangered black-necked crane, one of the most important protected bird species in China.
Every year from September to March of the following year, black-necked cranes migrate to Napa Lake and spend nearly half a year in this peaceful wetland habitat.
Besides black-necked cranes, the reserve is also home to many other bird species, including:
* Bar-headed geese
* Gray geese
* Other migratory water birds
* Various plateau bird species
The rich wetlands and abundant grasslands provide an ideal environment for these birds to rest, feed and breed.

A Unique Plateau Wetland Landscape
Napa Lake is a seasonal alpine lake located about 8 kilometers northwest of Shangri-La town.
Unlike ordinary lakes, Napa Lake changes dramatically with the seasons. During the rainy season, it becomes a vast lake surrounded by mountains, while during the dry season, the water level decreases and large areas transform into green grasslands.
The reserve features:
* Alpine wetlands
* Vast grasslands
* Snow-covered mountains
* Tibetan villages
* Grazing livestock
The peaceful combination of nature and traditional pastoral life creates a unique plateau landscape in southwest China.

The Largest Grassland in Shangri-La
Napa Lake is located in one of Yunnan’s most beautiful high-altitude meadow areas and is known as the largest grassland in Shangri-La.
Thanks to its humid plateau climate, vegetation grows abundantly compared with many other high-altitude regions.
The scenery of snow mountains, green grasslands and grazing animals resembles a magnificent northern grassland landscape, earning Napa Lake a reputation as one of the most beautiful natural areas around Shangri-La.

Rich Biodiversity and Ecological Value
As an important wetland ecosystem, Napa Lake supports a wide variety of wildlife.
The reserve protects:
* Black-necked cranes
* Migratory water birds
* Plateau plants
* Wetland ecosystems
The unique geographical location and diverse habitats make Napa Lake an excellent destination for:
* Birdwatching
* Wildlife photography
* Nature exploration
* Plateau sightseeing

Experience the Natural Beauty of Shangri-La
With its magnificent mountains, peaceful wetlands and rare wildlife, Napa Lake Nature Reserve offers visitors a chance to experience the pure beauty of the Tibetan Plateau.
For travelers exploring Shangri-La, Napa Lake is an unforgettable destination where nature, wildlife and Tibetan cultural landscapes come together.
