World First Peak Everest
Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, is located on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau (Qinghai-Tibet Plateau), forming part of the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
The mountain was named after Sir George Everest, a British surveyor who served as Surveyor General of India from 1829 to 1843. During his service, detailed surveys were conducted in the Himalayan region, and the peak, then known as Peak XV, was officially identified and measured.
In 1954, the official height of Mount Everest was determined to be 8,848 meters (29,028 feet), confirming it as the highest point above sea level on Earth. Today, the mountain remains one of the world’s most iconic natural landmarks and attracts climbers, adventurers and travelers from around the globe.
Names of Mount Everest
Mount Everest has different names reflecting the cultures and traditions of the Himalayan region.
In Nepal, the mountain is widely known as Sagarmatha, meaning “Forehead in the Sky.” Among Tibetan-speaking communities, including the Sherpa people of northern Nepal, it is called Chomolungma, meaning “Goddess Mother of the World” in Tibetan.
These names reflect the deep spiritual and cultural significance that the mountain has held for local communities for centuries.
