Located on the border between Heilongjiang Province in Northeast China and Primorsky Krai in Russia, Khanka Lake (Xingkai Lake) is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Northeast Asia. Situated about 120 kilometers from Jixi City, this transboundary lake covers a total area of approximately 4,190 square kilometers, with around 3,030 square kilometers in Russia and 1,160 square kilometers in China.
Surrounded by vast wetlands, forests, grasslands, and fertile plains, Khanka Lake is an important ecological area known for biodiversity conservation, bird migration research, and eco-tourism. The Chinese side of the lake is protected as a national nature reserve, while the Russian side is also under nature protection, making Khanka Lake a valuable international wetland ecosystem.
A Natural Wetland and Wildlife Sanctuary
Khanka Lake is one of the most important habitats for migratory birds in Northeast Asia. Every spring, thousands of migratory birds travel along the East Asian flyway and stop here for rest and feeding.
The lake provides an ideal environment for many rare bird species, including:
* Lesser white-fronted goose
* Various wild ducks
* Swans
* Water birds
The surrounding wetlands, forests, and grasslands also support diverse wildlife, making the area an excellent destination for birdwatching, photography, and ecological exploration.
The Emerald of Northern China
Khanka Lake consists of two connected sections: a larger lake and a smaller lake separated by a sandy ridge covered with green vegetation.
The smaller lake is peaceful and tranquil, with clear water, birds flying across the sky, fish swimming beneath the surface, and occasional boats passing through the quiet landscape.
The larger lake presents a completely different scene, with vast open waters often covered by mist. The endless horizon where the lake meets the sky has earned Khanka Lake the reputation of being the “Emerald of Northern China.”
