Chuancai Museum of Sichuan Cuisine
Chuancai Museum of Sichuan Cuisine in ChengduThe Chengdu Chuancai Museum of Sichuan Cuisine ( 川菜博物馆 Sichuan Cuisine Museum ) is located in Pidu District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, near one of the region’s historic ancient towns. As a National AAAA Tourist Attraction and a National Second-Class Museum, it is China’s first museum dedicated entirely to Sichuan cuisine and culinary culture.
Often described as “the world’s first edible museum,” the Sichuan Chuancai Museum offers visitors an immersive experience that combines history, culture, interactive cooking, and authentic local flavors. Covering approximately 40 mu (about 2.7 hectares), the museum houses a collection of more than 6,000 cultural artifacts related to the history and development of Sichuan cuisine.
Unlike traditional museums, visitors here can not only explore exhibitions but also taste authentic Sichuan dishes, participate in cooking classes, and experience the rich culinary heritage that has made Sichuan cuisine famous around the world.

Museum Highlights
The Chengdu Chuancai Museum Museum features a variety of themed exhibition areas, including:
* Sichuan Cuisine Collection Hall
* Interactive Cooking Demonstration Hall
* Traditional Tea House
* Kitchen God (Zao Wang) Temple
* Sichuan Ingredients Exhibition Area
* Traditional Kitchen Tools Exhibition Hall
* Sichuan Pickle Culture Exhibition
Among its unique treasures are a traditional pickle jar valued at more than RMB 4 million, the largest Kitchen God Temple in China, and demonstrations of traditional handmade Pixian Doubanjiang (broad bean chili paste)—one of the essential ingredients of authentic Sichuan cuisine.
These exhibits provide visitors with a fascinating insight into the origins, techniques, and cultural significance of one of China’s Eight Great Culinary Traditions.

Interactive Sichuan Cooking Experience
One of the museum’s most popular attractions is its hands-on Sichuan cooking class.
Under the guidance of experienced local chefs, visitors learn to prepare several classic Sichuan dishes using traditional cooking techniques. During the class, participants discover the secrets behind Sichuan cuisine, including:
* Traditional knife skills
* Precise temperature control
* Ingredient preparation techniques
* Sauce blending
* High-heat stir-frying methods
The cooking experience highlights the unique characteristics of Sichuan cuisine, where chefs skillfully combine fresh ingredients, aromatic spices, and balanced seasonings to create dishes with distinctive flavors.
Visitors also gain a deeper understanding of the famous Sichuan culinary philosophy:
* “One dish, one unique flavor.”
* “Hundreds of dishes, hundreds of different tastes.”
* “Five fundamental flavors create countless delicious aromas.”
By cooking, tasting, and smelling the finished dishes, guests experience why Sichuan cuisine is celebrated worldwide for its remarkable complexity and diversity.
