The Chuan Malt Whisky Distillery in Emei Mount
The Chuan Malt Whisky Distillery in Emei was established with investment from Pernod Ricard, one of the world's leading whisky producers, in a river valley five kilometers from Emei Mountain—on the site of the ancient Lingyan Temple, which dates back over a millennium.
From architectural design to the naming of the distillery, "the Chuan"， or “ Die Chuan 叠川”in Chinese fully embodies China's traditional philosophy of binary opposition: things are both contradictory and interdependent. The two Chinese characters "Die Chuan" originate from local geography and culture. "Die" derives from a scenic spot at Lingyan Temple called "Lingyan Diecui," symbolizing "richness, fullness, and distinct layers"; "Chuan" represents Sichuan Province, meaning "river," vividly depicting how pure water flows gently through Mount Emei to brew fresh and pure whisky. This ingenious combination perfectly illustrates the "mountains and waters" of Emei's landscape, the "clarity and intensity" of the whisky product, and the "beginning and end" of the distillery's construction.
The distillery was designed by the award-winning Neri & Hu Design Studio, achieving a harmonious integration of timeless architecture with the natural surroundings. The design incorporates artistic elements inherent in the whisky-making process, creating a perfect synergy. Furthermore, the facility will serve as a permanent exhibition space for artworks. By fully leveraging the surrounding natural environment, the distillery embodies a profound tribute to the local terroir.
Die Chuan combines the original Scottish whisky production techniques with China-specific elements to create its own distinctive Chinese interpretation.
Thanks to the region's excellent natural environment, the natural water sourced from Mount Emei used by the distillery is of superior quality. Moreover, backed by the Pernod Ricard Group with over a century of whisky-making expertise, the distillery employs first-class production techniques that ensure reliability.
The distillation workshop houses a pair of custom-made traditional copper pot distillers, handcrafted by the renowned Scottish distiller Forsyths, specifically designed for this winery and set to impart a distinctive character and flavor to the final product.
Diechuan Distillery has made remarkable strides in whisky aging, particularly in the selection and innovation of aging barrel materials. In addition to using traditional American and European oak barrel, the distillery and its team have boldly adopted "China white oak" sourced from Changbai shan Mountain—a pioneering initiative in the entire China whisky industry.
Beyond the distillery itself, The Chuan has leveraged the surrounding stunning natural scenery to create tourist-friendly attractions and the Black Pearl Restaurant. Visitors can come here to learn about whisky culture while enjoying meals at the restaurant. It is also good for school tour of learning about Whisky cultur.
