Chongsheng Si Temple and the Three Pagodas
Chongsheng Si Temple is the most important royal Buddhist monastery in the history of the 
Dali Kingdom and the largest ancient temple ever built in Dali. It is best known for the Three Pagodas—one large central pagoda flanked by two smaller ones—which have become the iconic symbol of Dali and one of China's most celebrated Buddhist architectural treasures.

Located about one kilometer north of Dali Ancient Town, Chongsheng Si Temple sits at the foot of the majestic Cangshan Mountains and overlooks the beautiful Erhai Lake. The spectacular setting makes it one of the most popular attractions in Yunnan Province.
Originally built during the Nanzhao Kingdom (9th century), the temple flourished under the succeeding Dali Kingdom, when Dali was widely known as the "Land of Buddhism." Chongsheng Temple became the religious center of the kingdom, with Guanyin (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) as its principal deity. Buddhism deeply influenced local society, and nine of the twenty-two Dali Kingdom emperors eventually became monks at the temple.
The temple was once famous for its Five Great Treasures: the Three Pagodas, the Nanzhao Great Bell, the Bronze Guanyin Statue Bringing Rain, the Golden Three Saints Statue, and the plaque inscribed "Capital of Buddhism." Unfortunately, all but the Three Pagodas were destroyed over the centuries by wars and natural disasters.
The Three Pagodas remain remarkably well preserved after more than a thousand years, standing as enduring symbols of Dali's rich Buddhist heritage. In 1056 AD, the King of Myanmar visited Chongsheng Temple twice to pay homage to the Buddha's Tooth Relic, while Emperor Duan Silian of the Dali Kingdom presented the temple with a precious jade Buddha statue, highlighting its significance as an important center of Buddhist pilgrimage and cultural exchange.
Today, Chongsheng Si Temple and the Three Pagodas are must-visit attractions for travelers exploring Dali, offering a fascinating blend of history, religion, architecture, and breathtaking natural scenery.
