Wudangzhao Monastery
Wudangzhao, which means "willow tree" in Mongolian, was initially constructed during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1662–1722) by the first living Buddha Lobzang Gyatso, modeled after the Tibet Tashilhunpo Monastery. It underwent multiple expansions during the reigns of Kangxi, Qianlong, Jiaqing, Daoguang, and Guangxu, gradually growing to its current scale. Located on a hillside called Aobao Mountain in Wudang Valley, it is commonly known as Wudangzhao. Built facing south according to the terrain, the complex comprises over 2,500 halls, scripture rooms, and monks 'quarters across more than 300 mu of land distributed along a 1.5-kilometer-long slope. It consists of white buildings stacked layer by layer against the mountainside, surrounded by lush pines and cypresses, presenting a majestic and imposing sight. Alongside the Potala Palace in Xizang, Ta' er Temple in Qinghai, and Labrang Monastery in Gansu, it ranks among the four renowned Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in China and is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The main complex of Wudangzhao consists of eight scripture halls (six of which remain today), three residences for living Buddhas, and a memorial hall housing the stupa containing the relics of successive living Buddhas of this temple. Additionally, it includes over sixty monastic quarters and ancillary structures for the pagoda temple, totaling more than 2,500 rooms across an area of over 300 mu.

Dangwangzhao is also a renowned Buddhist academy in Inner Mongolia. To promote Buddhism, it established specialized academies (zha-cangs) for lamas to study scriptures and research Buddhist philosophy. The six surviving scripture halls include the Suguqin Hall, Dongk'er Hall, Queyiri Hall (for exoteric teachings), Dangge Xide Hall, Ahui Hall (for esoteric teachings), and Rimulun Hall (for Bodhi path studies). The Suguqin Hall serves as the central venue for temple-wide scripture recitations. These halls are grand in scale and represent typical Tibetan architectural complexes. Each features a complete collection of statues, murals, and thangkas (roll-based Buddhist paintings), with distinct characteristics: some house ten-meter-tall bronze statues of Sakyamuni, others display nine-meter-tall bronze statues of Tsongkhapa—the founder of the Gelug school—as well as images of Dharma protectors or the White Tara and Green Tara.

The living Buddha at Wudangzhao was one of the eight major Hutuktu rulers stationed in Beijing during the Qing Dynasty, known as "Erdeni Morigen Dongkore Banzhida," enjoying exceptionally high prestige and status.
