Yuquan Temple and Yuquan Mountain
Yuquan Temple, located on the eastern foothills of Yuquan Mountain, is 12 kilometers 
away from the ancient battlefield of Changbanpo and the urban area of Dangyang City, 1 hour’s driving from Yichang city. With a total area of 1,253 square meters and a height of 22 meters, it was one of the first key temples opened to the public in China in 1983 and is a scenic spot in Dangyang City, Hubei Province. The Great Hall of Yuquan Temple is the largest ancient architectural structure in southern China. In front of the hall are over ten large iron artifacts from the Sui Dynasty (6th century ); beside the hall stands a stone-carved image of Guanyin, believed to be the handwork of Wu Daozi, the master painter of the Tang Dynasty. The existing Yuquan Iron Pagoda holds significant value for studying ancient Chinese metallurgy and casting, metal corrosion resistance, construction techniques, architectural mechanics, casting and sculpting arts, as well as Buddhist history.
In 218 AD (22nd year of Jian 'an era during the Eastern Han Dynasty), Monk Pujing
built a thatched hut here as his meditation retreat. During the Later Liang Dynasty's Dading era (559 AD), Emperor Xuan of Liang commissioned the construction of Fuchuanshan Temple (now known as Yuquan Temple). In the Sui Dynasty's Kaihuang period, Monk Zhikou, founder of the Tiantai School of Buddhism, officially established Yuquan Temple at this site. During the Tang Dynasty, Shenxiu of the Northern Chan School traveled from Huangmei's Dongshan Temple to propagate Zen teachings here, earning widespread reverence across the empire.
Yuquan Temple is one of the ancestral temples of the Tiantai School in Buddhism. It was once renowned alongside Zhejiang's Guoqing Temple in Tiantaishan mountain, Shandong's Lingyan Temple in Jinan, and Jiangsu's Qixia Temple in Nanjing as one of the "Four Great Wonders of the World," and was acclaimed as a "Famous Mountain of the Three Chu Regions." Both Yuquan Temple and its Iron Pagoda have been listed as National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
The scenic spots of Yuquan Temple include the Great Buddha Hall, Sutra Pavilion, Drum Tower, and South Wing Rooms.
