Yuquan Temple and Yuquan Mountain
Yuquan Temple is one of China’s most celebrated ancient Buddhist temples, located on the eastern slope of Yuquan Mountain in Dangyang, Hubei Province. Situated approximately 12 kilometers from downtown Dangyang and about one hour’s drive from Yichang, the temple is renowned for its rich Buddhist heritage, magnificent ancient architecture, and profound historical significance.
As one of the birthplaces of Tiantai Buddhism in China, Yuquan Temple has been an important center of Buddhist learning and pilgrimage for more than 1,400 years. Together with its famous Yuquan Iron Pagoda, the temple is designated as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

A Temple with More Than 1,400 Years of History
The origins of Yuquan Temple can be traced to 218 AD, when the Buddhist monk Pujing established a small meditation retreat on the mountain.
During the Later Liang Dynasty in 559 AD, Emperor Xuan of Liang ordered the construction of Fuchuan Mountain Temple, the predecessor of today’s Yuquan Temple. In the Sui Dynasty (581–618), the eminent monk Zhiyi, founder of the Tiantai School of Buddhism, further developed the temple, establishing it as one of the most influential Buddhist centers in China.
During the Tang Dynasty, the renowned Chan (Zen) master Shenxiu also taught at Yuquan Temple, greatly enhancing its religious prestige throughout the empire.

One of China’s Most Important Buddhist Temples
For centuries, Yuquan Temple has been recognized as one of the ancestral temples of the Tiantai School of Buddhism.
Historically, it was celebrated alongside Guoqing Temple in Zhejiang, Lingyan Temple in Shandong, and Qixia Temple in Nanjing as one of China’s most distinguished Buddhist monasteries. It also earned the title “Famous Buddhist Mountain of the Three Chu Regions” for its important role in the religious history of central China.

Highlights of Yuquan Temple
Great Buddha Hall
The magnificent Great Buddha Hall (Mahavira Hall) is the architectural centerpiece of Yuquan Temple. Covering approximately 1,253 square meters and standing 22 meters high, it is recognized as one of the largest surviving ancient wooden Buddhist halls in southern China.
Its grand timber structure demonstrates the remarkable craftsmanship of traditional Chinese architecture and remains one of the temple’s greatest treasures.

Yuquan Iron Pagoda
The Yuquan Iron Pagoda is among the temple’s most famous landmarks. This rare iron pagoda provides valuable insight into ancient Chinese metallurgy, casting technology, architecture, and Buddhist art, making it an important monument for both historians and archaeologists.

Stone Guanyin Statue
Near the Great Buddha Hall stands an elegant stone statue of Guanyin (Avalokitesvara). According to local tradition, it is associated with the legendary Tang Dynasty painter Wu Daozi, although this attribution remains part of local folklore.

Ancient Iron Relics
In front of the Great Buddha Hall are several large iron artifacts dating back to the Sui Dynasty, reflecting the advanced metalworking techniques of ancient China and adding to the temple’s historical significance.

Things to See at Yuquan Temple
The temple complex includes several important historical buildings, including:
* Great Buddha Hall (Mahavira Hall)
* Sutra Repository
* Drum Tower
* Bell Tower
* South Wing Buildings
* Yuquan Iron Pagoda
* Ancient stone carvings and gardens
Visitors can also enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings while experiencing the tranquil atmosphere of one of China’s oldest Buddhist temples.

Why Visit Yuquan Temple?
As one of the most important Buddhist temples in Hubei Province, Yuquan Temple combines religious history, ancient architecture, and beautiful natural scenery. Its magnificent wooden halls, historic Iron Pagoda, and deep connections with the Tiantai and Chan schools of Buddhism make it an exceptional destination for cultural travelers, history enthusiasts, and Buddhist pilgrims alike.
Often included in itineraries with Dangyang Guanling Mausoleum, Three Kingdoms historical sites, and attractions in Yichang, Yuquan Temple offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into more than fourteen centuries of Chinese religious and architectural heritage.
Whether you are interested in Buddhist history, ancient architecture, or the cultural legacy of central China, Yuquan Temple is a must-visit destination that showcases the enduring spirit of Chinese Buddhism.
