Guanyu Mausoleum in Dangyang
Dangyang Guanyu Mausoleum is located 3 kilometers northwest of the urban area of Dangyang City, serving as the burial site for the remains of Guan Yu, a renowned general for his extreme loyalty to Liubei, the emperor of Su Kingdom in Shu Han period (about 3rd century). This site adheres to imperial mausoleum standards and bears a plaque inscribed with "Weizhen Huaxia" (Vigorously Dominating China) bestowed by Emperor Qianlong in Qing dynasty. It is the final resting place of Guan Yu's remains.

Historical records indicate that in the 24th year of the Jian 'an era during the Eastern Han Dynasty (219 AD), the King of Wu kingdom, Sun Quan launched a surprise attack on Jingzhou, seized Jiangling, and dispatched generals to confront Guan Yu. They captured Guanyu in Dangyang, where Sun Quan executed Guan Yu at Linzhu. Fearing retaliation from Liu Bei's army, Sun Quan presented Guan Yu's head to Cao Cao and buried his body in Dangyang according to feudal rites. Recognizing the Eastern Wu strategy, Cao Cao similarly buried Guan Yu's head outside Luoyang's southern gate with feudal honors. This historical event gave rise to the legendary saying: "Guan Yu lay body in Dangyang, his head resting upon Luoyang."

Since the Sui and Tang dynasties, successive emperors bestowed titles upon Guan Yu, elevating him to the status of Martial Sage and even Emperor Guan. His mausoleum complex subsequently expanded into a grand architectural complex. By the 15th year of the Jiajing reign in the Ming Dynasty (1536 AD), it had evolved into the "Guanling Mausoleum" architectural ensemble, a name preserved to this day. Despite multiple renovations over the centuries, the site retains its Ming Dynasty architectural style. The complex is connected by palace walls, featuring red bricks and yellow tiles that create a magnificent and opulent appearance. Along the central axis of the mausoleum, structures are arranged sequentially from front to back: the Sacred Path Stele Pavilion, ornamental pillars, stone archways, three concentric gates, a horse hall, worship hall, main hall, burial chamber, and tomb itself. Flanking the complex are octagonal pavilions, Spring-Autumn Pavilion, and stele corridors. The main hall serves as the central structure, adorned with a golden plaque inscribed "Dominating China" on its front eaves. Inside, life-sized statues of Guan Yu and his son alongside Zhou Cang are displayed, their vivid depictions exuding awe-inspiring grandeur. The burial chamber houses a 3.6-meter-tall, 800-kilogram bronze statue of Guan Gong cast with donations from Taiwanese compatriots. Behind the chamber lies a 7-meter-high tomb mound with a 70-meter circumference, encircled by stone walls and carved railings featuring motifs like "a dragon stretching like the sea." A stele pavilion before the tomb displays the inscription "Tomb of Marquis of Hanshou Pavilion." The entire mausoleum boasts serene landscapes with towering cypresses, picturesque mountains and waters, and ever-changing scenery throughout the seasons. Coupled with the enduring popularity of Three Kingdoms legends and the revered virtues of Guan Gong, it attracts countless domestic and international visitors who come to pay homage and pay their respects.

China currently has three tombs of Guan Yu. The first is the closing Tomb in Jiezhou, Shanxi Province, Guan Yu's hometown, known as Guan Temple; the second is the place where Guan Yu's head was buried in great honor in Luoyang, Henan Province, known as Guan Forest (Guanlin); the third is the Guan Mausoleum (Guanling ) in Dangyang.
