Enshi Grand Canyon
The Enshi Grand Canyon is located in Tunbao Township, Enshi City, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province, at the junction of Sichuan, Chongqing, and Hubei provinces. It lies 49 kilometers from Enshi city and 39 kilometers from Lichuan city, spanning 108 kilometers in length and covering an area of 300 square kilometers.
The scenic area comprises two core attractions—the Qixingzhai Scenic Area and the Yunlong Ground fissure Scenic Area—as well as the live-action drama performance "Dragon Boat Tune." Key sites such as the Yizhuxiang Incense Pillar, Welcoming Pine, Grand Landscapes, and Mother-Child Bond are all situated within the Qixingzhai Scenic Area. The canyon features spectacular features including sheer cliffs stretching for hundreds of meters, towering waterfalls, majestic peaks, primeval forests, and ancient villages. Two peaks adjacent to the Yizhuxiang stone pillar were officially named the Deanport Twin Peaks on April 22,2012, and form part of the Hubei Enshi Tenglong Cave Grand Canyon Geopark.
The Cliff Corridor, also known as the "Cliff Plank Road," was constructed in October 2007. It spans 488 meters with 118 steps and is situated on the mountain waist of a sheer cliff at an altitude of over 1,700 meters, featuring a net vertical drop of more than 300 meters. The project integrates traditional Sichuan
plank road construction techniques with advanced modern reinforced concrete construction methods, ensuring scientific rigor and safety while embodying the courage and wisdom of contemporary developers. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Wuling Mountains throughout their journey along the plank road.
The Bowing Pine is a representative of one of the five wonders of the Enshi Grand Canyon. In karst landscapes, sheer cliffs exist without peak clusters, and peak clusters exist without sheer cliffs. Yet this pine tree in the canyon embodies the hospitable Tujia and Miao people, bowing deeply to visitors from afar—a gesture that serves both as a welcome and a farewell.
A single incense stick stands over 150 meters tall with a minimum diameter of just 4 meters. The local rock possesses a compressive strength of 800 kilograms per cubic centimeter—resistant to both wind and rain—and has stood firm among the peaks for millennia, safeguarding this mysterious land.
The Enshi Grand Canyon Large-Scale Landscape Real-Scene Music Theater is situated along the unique karst landscape of the canyon, covering an area of over 240 mu (approximately 39 hectares) with a total floor area of 49,000 square meters. It is one of the largest canyon-based live-action theaters in the world, housing a cast and crew of more than 500 members. The venue features seating capacity for over 2,580 spectators simultaneously. Its most extensive river system in the world spans over 120 meters in length, narrowing to nearly 10 meters in width and reaching depths exceeding 10 meters—creating spectacular waterfalls when split. The theater faithfully recreates the original stilted buildings embodying the distinctive Tujia architectural style within its village setting, complemented by a main Tusi building designed in the architectural style of the Rongmei Tusi era.
The Yunlong Ground Rift was formed at least 50 million years ago, stretching 3.6 kilometers in length with an average depth of 75 meters and width of 15 meters. Its U-shaped profile creates an ecological tourism area that primarily showcases pristine natural landscapes, complemented by science education and adventure activities. The site integrates themed mountain and water sightseeing, immersive geological experiences, and outdoor adventure sports. With its steep banks, cascading waterfalls, murmuring streams beneath the fissure, connections to the Tian Shui underground river above, and links to the vast Qingjiang River below, the Yunlong Ground Rift stands as one of the most spectacular wonders of the Enshi Grand Canyon.
