Furong Cave and Furong River in Wulong
Furong River in ChongqingThe Furong River originates in Suiyang County, Tongzi County of Guizhou Province, with a total length of 243 kilometers. It enters Chongqing Municipality through Haokou Township in Wulong District and flows northward into the Wujiang River. Within its 35-kilometer section in Chongqing, the Furong River forms a beautiful “green jade belt” surrounded by magnificent mountains, cliffs, forests, waterfalls, caves, and clear streams.
Known for its spectacular karst landscape, Furong River Scenic Area combines mountains, water, caves, forests, springs, and gorges into one breathtaking natural destination. The scenery features a perfect blend of grandeur, uniqueness, adventure, beauty, tranquility, and mystery, making it one of the most attractive nature destinations in Wulong, Chongqing.
Along the Furong River, visitors can explore a variety of scenic spots, including the world-famous Furong Cave, traditional Miao village culture, ancient forests, bamboo seas, monkey gardens, and banana forests. Other highlights include Butterfly Valley, Longkong Waterfall, the stalagmite formations in the Xuankong Dam Scenic Area, and attractions such as Red Army Crossing, Agate Flying Spring, Jiang Taigong Fishing Platform, and Pearl Creek in the Pearl Creek Scenic Area.
Besides its spectacular high-gorge reservoir scenery, the Furong River is also dotted with numerous peninsulas and islands, offering excellent opportunities for sightseeing, leisure holidays, rafting, and water entertainment. It has become one of the best destinations for travelers seeking natural beauty and outdoor experiences near Chongqing.

Magnificent Scenery of Furong River
The scenery of the Furong River is both elegant and dramatic. The river flows with emerald-green water and sparkling blue waves, winding through deep valleys surrounded by ancient trees and towering peaks. Some sections of the river are calm like a mirror, allowing visitors to see fish swimming clearly in the shallow water, while other areas feature rushing rapids and waterfalls that create a spectacular natural symphony.
The clear water reflects the surrounding mountains, while bamboo forests and ancient trees line the riverbanks. Taking a boat or rafting journey along the Furong River allows visitors to enjoy the peaceful valley atmosphere, feel the gentle mountain breeze, and escape the busy pace of city life.
The Furong River Gorge is a typical V-shaped canyon, featuring steep cliffs, dense original vegetation, and numerous waterfalls cascading from the mountains. The tranquil environment gives the canyon a sense of mystery and serenity. The surrounding peaks display various unique shapes—some towering and majestic, some resembling giant figures, and others standing like bamboo shoots reaching toward the sky.
Furong Cave in ChongqingAfter passing through Jiangkou Town in Wulong, the Furong River finally joins the mighty Wujiang River, creating a spectacular landscape where rivers and mountains blend harmoniously.

Furong Cave: A World-Class Karst Wonder in Wulong
Located about 4 kilometers from the Furong River in Jiangkou Town, Wulong District, Furong Cave was discovered in May 1993. After several scientific investigations conducted by karst cave research institutions from China and Australia, it was recognized as a “world natural wonder,” a first-class cave scenic attraction, an underground art palace, and a natural cave science museum.
The main passage of Furong Cave stretches for approximately 2,700 meters, covering an area of about 37,000 square meters. Among its many sections, the Brilliant Hall is the most spectacular, covering an area of 11,000 square meters.
The cave contains almost every major type of karst deposition found in caves around the world, displaying an extraordinary collection of stalactites, stalagmites, stone waterfalls, stone curtains, and crystal formations. The 15-meter-wide and 21-meter-high stone waterfall and stone curtain are among the most impressive sights inside the cave. Other rare formations include smooth brown tung-shaped stalagmites, sparkling curly stones, delicate stone flowers, red coral-like formations, and precious dog-shaped calcite crystals.
Thousands of years of natural geological processes have created a magnificent underground world filled with colorful and unique landscapes. The major attractions inside Furong Cave include the Golden Temple, Leifeng Pagoda, Jade Pillar, Heaven Realm, Yulin Qionghua, Underwater Dragon Palace, Giant Curtain Waterfall, Stone Pearl, Reproductive Pillar, and Coral Yao Pool.
Walking through Furong Cave feels like entering a mysterious underground palace created by nature. With its spectacular karst formations and extraordinary geological value, Furong Cave is one of the must-visit attractions in Wulong Chongqing and an important natural heritage site in China.
