Yaqing Monastery in Baiyu
Located in Acha Township, Baiyu County, in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, Yaqing Monastery (Yaqing Temple) is one of the largest and most remarkable centers of Nyingma (Red Sect) Tibetan Buddhism. Situated at an altitude of approximately 4,000 meters (13,120 feet) and about 120 kilometers from Baiyu County, the monastery is renowned for its breathtaking high-altitude setting, profound spiritual atmosphere, and one of the world’s largest communities of Buddhist nuns.
Surrounded by the vast grasslands of the eastern Tibetan Plateau, Yaqing Monastery has become an important destination for Buddhist practitioners, photographers, cultural travelers, and visitors seeking a deeper understanding of Tibetan spiritual traditions.

One of the World’s Largest Buddhist Nunneries
What makes Yaqing Monastery truly unique is its extraordinary community of Buddhist nuns, known in Tibetan as “Jomo” (also spelled Juemu or Jo-mo).
With an estimated population that has historically reached tens of thousands of nuns, Yaqing has been recognized as one of the largest Buddhist nunneries in the world. The monastery serves as a major center for Buddhist study, meditation, and religious practice, attracting practitioners from across Tibet and other Tibetan Buddhist regions.
In Tibetan culture, the title Jomo is a respectful term traditionally associated with women of honor and spiritual dedication, reflecting the high regard accorded to female monastic practitioners.

A Unique Monastic Landscape
Yaqing Monastery is beautifully situated on the Changtai Grassland, where the Changqu River flows through the heart of the settlement.
The monastery is divided into two distinct areas:
* Eastern Bank – Home to the vast residential community of Buddhist nuns, with thousands of simple wooden dwellings spreading across the wetlands and gentle hillsides.
* Western Bank – The monks’ residential and religious area, located along the surrounding slopes.
Viewed from above, the countless red wooden cabins clustered beside the river create one of the most striking and recognizable landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau.

A Center for Buddhist Learning and Meditation
As an important monastery of the Nyingma School, Yaqing is dedicated to the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and monastic discipline.
Daily life revolves around:
* Buddhist scripture study
* Meditation retreats
* Religious chanting
* Traditional rituals and ceremonies
* Community service
* Spiritual education
The peaceful environment and remote location provide ideal conditions for long-term meditation and spiritual cultivation.

Women in Tibetan Buddhism
Yaqing Monastery is internationally known for highlighting the important role of women in Tibetan Buddhism.
Inspired by Buddhist teachings that emphasize the equality of all sentient beings, the monastery has long provided women with opportunities for advanced religious education, meditation, and spiritual practice.
Within the Nyingma tradition, wisdom is often symbolized through feminine imagery, including the revered concept of the Prajñā Buddha Mother, representing transcendent wisdom and enlightenment.
The monastery reflects the longstanding Tibetan Buddhist belief that both women and men possess equal potential to achieve spiritual awakening.

Experience Tibetan Spiritual Culture
Visitors to Yaqing Monastery can experience one of the most authentic religious communities on the Tibetan Plateau.
The monastery offers opportunities to:
* Observe daily monastic life
* Admire traditional Tibetan Buddhist architecture
* Experience a peaceful atmosphere of meditation and devotion
* Learn about the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism
* Appreciate the unique cultural heritage of eastern Tibet
* Photograph one of the world’s most extraordinary monastic settlements
Because Yaqing remains an active religious community, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly, remain quiet inside religious areas, and respect local customs and monastic practices.

Spectacular Plateau Scenery
Beyond its spiritual importance, Yaqing Monastery is surrounded by magnificent alpine landscapes.
Rolling grasslands, winding rivers, wetlands, distant snow-capped mountains, and vast open skies create breathtaking scenery throughout the year. The dramatic contrast between the monastery’s thousands of red wooden residences and the surrounding wilderness makes Yaqing one of the most photogenic destinations in western Sichuan.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Yaqing Monastery is from May to October, when the weather is relatively mild and road conditions are most favorable.
Summer offers lush grasslands and comfortable daytime temperatures, while autumn brings crisp mountain air, brilliant colors, and excellent photography conditions.
Due to its high elevation, temperatures remain cool year-round, and visitors should prepare for strong sunshine and significant temperature differences between day and night.

Why Visit Yaqing Monastery?
Combining spectacular plateau landscapes, profound Buddhist traditions, and one of the world’s largest communities of Buddhist nuns, Yaqing Monastery offers a truly unique cultural and spiritual experience.
Whether you are interested in Tibetan Buddhism, religious culture, photography, meditation, or exploring the remote beauty of the eastern Tibetan Plateau, Yaqing Monastery provides an unforgettable journey into one of western China’s most extraordinary destinations.
