Located in the heart of Xinjiang, the Tarim Huyang Nature Reserve is one of the most remarkable desert ecosystems in China. Famous for its vast forests of Huyang trees (Populus euphratica), also known as desert poplars, the reserve protects one of the world’s largest and most concentrated areas of natural Huyang forest.
The reserve was established by the Xinjiang government in 1983 and was upgraded to a national-level nature reserve in 2006. It is located in Yuli and Luntai Counties of Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang, covering an area of approximately 395,000 hectares.
The main purpose of the reserve is to protect the Huyang forest ecosystem and its unique biodiversity, including the plants and wildlife that depend on this rare desert environment.
The World’s Largest Natural Huyang Forest
The Tarim Huyang Nature Reserve is located within the vast Tarim Basin, the largest inland basin in the world. The reserve is crossed by the Tarim River, the longest inland river in China, which flows for about 2,179 kilometers through the desert landscape.
To the north of the reserve lies the Taklimakan Desert, one of the largest deserts in the world. The combination of river, desert and forest creates a unique ecological environment rarely found elsewhere.
The Huyang forests in the Tarim Basin cover approximately 180,000 hectares, accounting for a significant proportion of China’s total Huyang forest resources. They represent the largest remaining natural Huyang forest ecosystem in the world, with exceptional biodiversity and ecological value.
Huyang Tree: The Desert Survivor
The Huyang tree, scientifically known as Populus euphratica, is often called a “living fossil” because it has existed since the Tertiary Period.
Known as the “hero tree of the desert,” Huyang is the only tall tree species capable of surviving naturally in extremely dry desert environments. It can live for more than 1,000 years, and even after death, its wood may remain standing for another thousand years without decaying.
Huyang trees have extraordinary adaptability. They can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from around 41.5°C in summer to -39.8°C in winter, survive with very limited rainfall, and tolerate drought, salt, sandstorms and flooding.
Because of these remarkable characteristics, Huyang has become a symbol of resilience and survival in the harsh environment of Xinjiang.
Unique Desert Ecosystem
The Huyang forests support a variety of plant communities. More than 60 species of trees and plants can be found in the reserve, including red willow and narrow-leaved oleaster.
Together, Huyang trees and associated vegetation form several different forest types, including:
* Young Huyang forests along riverbanks
* Reed-red willow-Huyang forests
* Red willow-Huyang forests
* Desert grassland-Huyang forest ecosystems
These habitats provide important shelter and food sources for many desert animals and contribute to maintaining ecological balance in the Tarim Basin.
A Four-Season Natural Wonder
The beauty of the Huyang forest changes dramatically throughout the year.
In spring, young branches and buds bring fresh green colors to the desert. During summer, the forests become lush and vibrant. In autumn, the leaves turn brilliant golden yellow, creating one of the most spectacular desert landscapes in China. As winter approaches, the forests take on deeper golden and brown tones, offering a peaceful and mysterious atmosphere.
The leaves of Huyang trees are especially unique, changing shape according to their age and growing conditions. The trees also produce a natural resin known as “Huyang Tears,” which has been traditionally used for various purposes.
For travelers seeking unique landscapes, desert adventures and rare natural wonders, the Tarim Huyang Nature Reserve offers an unforgettable journey into one of China’s most extraordinary ecosystems.
