Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve
Located in Qingchuan County of Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve is one of China’s most important wildlife conservation areas. Established in 1978 and upgraded to a national-level nature reserve in 1986, Tangjiahe focuses on the protection of giant pandas and their natural habitats.
Covering an area of approximately 40,000 hectares, the reserve is located about 300 kilometers north of Chengdu, in the transition zone between the Sichuan Basin and the Minshan Mountains. With its pristine forests, diverse ecosystems and rich wildlife resources, Tangjiahe is widely recognized as a natural treasure for biodiversity conservation.
The reserve is classified as an important nature reserve by international conservation organizations and is often described as a “Natural Gene Bank,” a “Home of Life” and the “Green Pearl of the Minshan Mountains.”

A Paradise for Giant Pandas and Wildlife
Tangjiahe features a subtropical monsoon climate and a wide range of elevations, from 1,150 meters to 3,837 meters above sea level. This dramatic variation in altitude creates diverse habitats, including forests, alpine areas and mountain valleys.
The reserve is home to an extraordinary variety of wildlife. Surveys have recorded more than 430 species of vertebrates belonging to 257 genera and 101 families, including 72 nationally protected species.
Among them are several first-class protected animals, including:
* Giant pandas
* Golden monkeys
* Takin
It is estimated that Tangjiahe provides a habitat for around 60 wild giant pandas, more than 1,000 golden monkeys and over 1,200 takins.
The combination of dense forests, abundant bamboo resources and peaceful mountain environments makes Tangjiahe one of the most important habitats for giant pandas in Sichuan.

Rich Plant Diversity and Ancient Forests
Besides its remarkable wildlife, Tangjiahe is also famous for its rich plant diversity.
More than 2,400 plant species have been identified in the reserve, including many rare and protected species. Ancient plant species dating back to the Tertiary Period can still be found here, including:
* Tetracentron sinense
* Euptelea
* Cercidiphyllum japonicum
* Magnolia denudata
Several endangered plants under national protection also grow in Tangjiahe, including ginkgo, dove tree and yew.
The ancient forests of Tangjiahe preserve valuable ecological resources and provide important habitats for countless species.

An Excellent Birdwatching Destination
Tangjiahe is also a paradise for bird lovers. The reserve is home to approximately 260 bird species, accounting for a significant proportion of Sichuan’s total bird diversity.
Among these birds, 47 species are nationally protected, including:
* Golden eagle
* Chinese monal
* Blood pheasant
* Blue-eared pheasant
Visitors can also observe many common and beautiful birds, such as hoopoes, crested kingfishers and red-billed magpies.
Scientists have also discovered the rare rusty-throated parrotbill in the Dacaotang area of the reserve. The best season for birdwatching is generally from July to August, when bird activity is at its highest.

Takin: A Rare Mountain Animal
The takin is one of the most distinctive animals found in Tangjiahe. Also known as cattle chamois, it belongs to the Bovidae family and is classified as a first-class nationally protected animal in China.
Similar to giant pandas, takins mainly inhabit mountainous areas of western China. Due to their limited population and endangered status, they are included in international wildlife protection programs.
Tangjiahe is one of the most important habitats for takins, with an estimated population of more than 1,200 individuals living within the reserve.

Natural Scenery and Historical Heritage
In addition to its wildlife and forests, Tangjiahe offers visitors spectacular natural landscapes, including mountains, valleys, streams and ancient forests.
The reserve also preserves historical sites connected with China’s Three Kingdoms period, including the ancient Yinping Road, as well as remains related to the Red Army’s Long March.
Combining rare wildlife, ancient forests and historical heritage, Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve provides travelers with an unforgettable experience of Sichuan’s natural beauty and cultural history.
