Changbai Mountain National Park
Located in western Hubei Province, Shennongjia National Park covers an area of approximately 76,950 hectares. It is renowned for its vast primeval forests, rich biodiversity, rare and endangered wildlife, abundant medicinal plants and spectacular mountain landscapes.
With its dense forests, high peaks, deep valleys and pristine streams, Shennongjia is one of the most important natural areas in central China. The region is also associated with numerous legends and mysteries, adding a sense of wonder to its already remarkable natural environment.
Spectacular Mountains and Forests
Towering, heavily forested mountains dominate the landscape of Shennongjia. Six peaks rise above 3,000 meters, creating an impressive mountain panorama.
The highest is Great Shennongjia Peak, which reaches an elevation of 3,052 meters. It is the highest peak in Hubei Province and is often known as the “Roof of Central China.” The surrounding mountains, deep valleys and extensive forests create some of the most spectacular scenery in the region.
Shaped by geological faults over millions of years, the area contains numerous steep canyons, ravines and valleys. Dense forests cover much of the park, forming an immense sea of green stretching across the mountains.
At an elevation of around 1,900 meters, mountain pastures surround a beautiful high-altitude lake. Clear streams and rivers flow through the forests and grasslands, while waterfalls descend from the mountain slopes and cliffs.
Precious and Rare Plant Species
Shennongjia is exceptionally rich in plant life, with almost 2,000 species of higher plants recorded in the region. Different vegetation communities can be found at different elevations.
At lower elevations, evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forests contain species such as beech, oak, poplar and birch. Higher up the mountains, coniferous forests and bamboo become more common, while areas above 3,000 meters are characterized by alpine meadows.
The park is particularly important for the conservation of rare and ancient plant species. Notable examples include long-petiole beech, katsura trees, Chinese tulip trees and dove trees. Many other valuable native species, including Chinese redbud, Chinese phoebe, camphor and Chinese box, can also be found in the region.
The extraordinary diversity of plants is one of the reasons Shennongjia is considered an important botanical treasure in China.
Ancient Trees of Shennongjia
Shennongjia is also home to numerous ancient and enormous trees. Among the most remarkable is a giant Davidia-related conifer known locally as an ancient giant tree, which is estimated to be hundreds of years old.
These impressive trees rise high above the surrounding forest and demonstrate the long history of the region’s natural ecosystems. Their immense size and age make them particularly fascinating attractions for visitors interested in botany and forest ecology.

Diverse Wildlife

Visitors exploring the park may encounter monkeys, deer, black bears, pheasants and other wildlife. Because many animals inhabit dense forests and mountainous terrain, sightings are never guaranteed, but the possibility of encountering wildlife adds excitement to exploring Shennongjia.
The park is particularly famous for its population of golden snub-nosed monkeys, a rare species endemic to China. These highly distinctive monkeys live in the mountain forests and feed on a variety of foods, including fruits, seeds, leaves, shoots and other vegetation.
Their presence is an important indicator of the ecological health of the Shennongjia forests and has made the region an important center for wildlife research and conservation.
