Located in Burqin County of Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Kanas Nature Reserve is one of the most spectacular natural destinations in China. Situated near the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mongolia, the reserve features a unique ecosystem composed of alpine lakes, glaciers, forests, grasslands, rivers, and diverse wildlife.
The name Kanas comes from the Mongolian language and means “beautiful, rich, mysterious, and fascinating.” With its pristine landscapes and untouched natural environment, Kanas is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful scenic areas in northern Xinjiang.
The highlight of the reserve is Kanas Lake, a stunning alpine lake formed by glacial activity. Originating from the Kanas Glacier in the Altai Mountains, the Kanas River flows through the mountains for approximately 125 kilometers before reaching the lake. Located at an altitude of 1,375 meters, Kanas Lake covers an area of about 45.73 square kilometers.
The color of Kanas Lake changes with different seasons, weather conditions, and sunlight. The water may appear deep blue, emerald green, or even milky white, creating a breathtaking landscape often described as a natural masterpiece.
Kanas Lake and Its Six Scenic Bays
Kanas Lake is famous for its six distinctive bays, each featuring unique geological landscapes and fascinating legends.
Wolong Bay (Crouching Dragon Bay)
Wolong Bay is one of the most photographed locations in Kanas Nature Reserve. The curved shape of the river resembles a sleeping dragon, surrounded by dense forests and crystal-clear water. The peaceful scenery makes it an ideal place for photography and sightseeing.
Moon Bay
Moon Bay is another iconic attraction of Kanas. Located along the Kanas River, this beautiful river bend forms a crescent shape surrounded by green forests and mountains. The scenery changes dramatically throughout the year, offering magnificent views during every season.
Fish Watching Pavilion
The Fish Watching Pavilion stands on a hill beside Kanas Lake and provides one of the best viewpoints overlooking the entire lake area. From the pavilion, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the turquoise lake, surrounding forests, and snow-capped mountains.
Natural Landscapes and Wildlife
Beyond Kanas Lake, the reserve is home to vast virgin forests, alpine meadows, rivers, and wetlands, creating a paradise for wildlife.
The Hemu Grassland, located at the meeting point of the Kanas River and Hemu River, is divided by the river into two scenic areas. The grasslands provide a peaceful habitat for many animals, including:
* Red deer
* Marmots
* Snowcocks
* Various alpine birds
The combination of forests, grasslands, rivers, and wildlife makes Kanas one of the most important ecological regions in Xinjiang.
Hemu Village and Tuva Culture
Inside the Kanas region lies Hemu Village, one of the three traditional settlements of the Tuva Mongol people in China. The Tuva people are believed to be descendants of ancient Mongolian tribes and have preserved their unique traditions, customs, and lifestyle for generations.
Traditional wooden houses, peaceful grasslands, and local festivals create a distinctive cultural atmosphere. Visitors can experience the traditional lifestyle of the Tuva people and enjoy the hospitality of local Kazakh families living around Hemu Grassland.
