Five Joined Lakes National Park
Located in Wudalianchi City, Heilongjiang Province, northeastern China, Five Joined Lakes National Park is one of China’s most fascinating volcanic destinations. Covering an area of approximately 70,000 hectares, the park is famous for having the largest concentration of volcanoes in northeastern China and one of the most spectacular volcanic landscapes in the country.
Created by volcanic eruptions more than 270 years ago, the park combines volcanic mountains, lava fields, crater landscapes, clear lakes, mineral springs, and unique geological formations, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers, geology enthusiasts, and eco-tourism travelers.

A Natural Museum of Volcanoes
Five Joined Lakes National Park is located on a vast volcanic lava field formed by eruptions between 1719 and 1721. During these eruptions, lava flows blocked the Bai River, creating five interconnected lakes that gave the park its name.
Although the lakes appear separate on the surface, they are connected underground through natural waterways. Surrounded by volcanic cones and forests, the calm lake waters reflect the blue sky and surrounding mountains, creating a stunning natural landscape.
The largest of the five lakes covers an area of about 82 square kilometers, with a depth of approximately 10 meters. The combination of volcanic peaks, clear water, and untouched nature makes the area one of China’s most remarkable volcanic lake regions.

Spectacular Volcanic Landforms
The ancient volcanic eruptions created a wide variety of geological wonders throughout the park.

Stone Dragon Lava Formation
One of the most famous attractions is the Stone Dragon, a 17-kilometer-long lava formation created by volcanic eruptions from Mount Laohei and Mount Huoshao.
Stretching along the Bai River, the rugged lava landscape resembles a giant dragon lying across the land. This unique geological formation is one of the most iconic symbols of Five Joined Lakes National Park.

Volcanic Caves and Underground Wonders
The Water Curtain Cave and Fairy Grotto are impressive underground lava tunnels located north of Mount Laohei.
These caves were formed when the surface lava cooled while the inner lava remained molten, creating natural underground passages. The caves extend hundreds of meters and contain unusual volcanic structures, offering visitors a mysterious exploration experience.

Sea of Volcanic Stones
The volcanic eruptions also created various lava fragments and volcanic rocks, including:
* Volcanic bombs
* Pumice stones
* Lapilli
* Lava debris
These unique volcanic remains form landscapes that resemble a natural stone desert, showcasing the powerful geological forces that shaped the region.

Rich Mineral Resources and Natural Hot Springs
Five Joined Lakes National Park is also famous for its abundant volcanic mineral resources.
Scientific surveys indicate that the region contains enormous deposits of volcanic lava, providing valuable materials for construction and industrial uses. Volcanic materials such as:
* Mineral wool
* Cast rock
* Pumice
* Lapilli
are widely used due to their special properties.
The park is also known for its natural mineral springs and hot springs, which attract visitors seeking relaxation and wellness experiences.

A Unique Destination for Nature and Geology Lovers
With its rare volcanic scenery, peaceful lakes, forest-covered mountains, mineral springs, and easy accessibility, Five Joined Lakes National Park has become one of Heilongjiang’s most popular natural attractions.
Visitors can enjoy:
* Exploring ancient volcanic landscapes
* Hiking volcanic mountains
* Visiting lava caves
* Photographing volcanic lakes
* Experiencing mineral hot springs
* Learning about geological history
Five Joined Lakes National Park offers a rare opportunity to witness the power of nature and discover one of China’s most extraordinary volcanic landscapes.
