Located on the northeastern shore of Qinghai Lake in Qinghai Province, northwest China, Bird Island National Park is one of the most important bird habitats and wetland conservation areas on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Qinghai Lake, also known as “Green Sea Lake,” is the largest inland saltwater lake in China. Surrounded by mountains and vast grasslands, the lake provides an ideal environment for migratory birds.
Covering an area of approximately 56,000 hectares, Bird Island National Park is recognized as an important international wetland and one of the most spectacular bird-watching destinations in China.
A Kingdom of Migratory Birds
Bird Island is one of the most famous natural bird sanctuaries in China.
Located in the northwest part of Qinghai Lake, the island covers about 7,850 hectares and is surrounded by wetlands, grasslands and open waters. The isolated environment protects birds from human disturbance, creating a perfect breeding and nesting area.
Every year, more than 100,000 migratory birds from different regions gather here, including over 100 bird species such as:
* Bar-headed geese
* Great black-headed gulls
* Great cormorants
* Common terns
* Black-necked cranes
* Swans
* Various species of ducks
Among them, bar-headed geese, gulls, cormorants and terns are the most common species, forming the largest bird colonies around Qinghai Lake.
Spectacular Bird Migration Season
The best time to visit Bird Island is during the spring migration season, usually from late March to early April.
During this period, thousands of migratory birds return from southern regions and gather on the island to build nests and raise their young.
Visitors can witness an unforgettable natural scene:
* Birds flying across the sky
* Thousands of nests covering the island
* Migratory birds gathering along the lakeshore
* Wildlife thriving in the wetland environment
The sight of countless birds filling the sky, land and water makes Bird Island one of the most impressive birdwatching destinations in China.
Qinghai Lake: A Rich Aquatic Ecosystem
Besides its remarkable birdlife, Qinghai Lake is also famous for its rich aquatic resources.
The lake is home to the Qinghai naked carp, an important native fish species that plays a vital role in maintaining the local ecosystem.
The clear waters of Qinghai Lake allow visitors to observe fish swimming beneath the surface. The peaceful lake reflects the surrounding islands, blue sky, white clouds and flying birds, creating a breathtaking natural landscape.
However, due to overfishing and environmental changes, the fish population has experienced challenges, and conservation efforts have been implemented to protect this unique ecosystem.
A Paradise for Nature Lovers
With its spectacular bird colonies, beautiful lake scenery and important ecological value, Bird Island National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers, photographers and nature enthusiasts.
The combination of wetlands, mountains, grasslands and wildlife makes Qinghai Lake one of the most remarkable natural landscapes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
