Bayinbuluke National Nature Reserve
Bayinbuluke Grassland surrounded by snow mountainsBayinbuluke is one of the most beautiful highland grasslands in Xinjiang, surrounded by the snow-covered peaks of the Tianshan Mountains. Famous for its vast wetlands, winding rivers, abundant wildlife and large population of swans, it is often described as one of China’s most important habitats for these elegant birds.
The name Bayinbuluke means “rich spring” or “fertile water” in Mongolian. Located in the central part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the area lies in the hinterland of the Tianshan Mountains at elevations ranging from approximately 2,300 to 3,100 meters.

A Vast Highland Grassland
Bayinbuluke Grassland is surrounded by magnificent snow-capped mountains. Meltwater from the surrounding peaks flows into the grassland, creating numerous streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands.
The grassland covers an extensive area and is one of the most important pastoral regions in Xinjiang. Its relatively cool and mild highland climate, abundant water resources and rich vegetation create favorable conditions for both wildlife and livestock.
In summer, the grassland becomes especially beautiful. Green meadows are covered with colorful wildflowers, while herds of horses, sheep and cattle graze across the open landscape. Snow-covered mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to the vast green plains.

Bayinbuluke Swan Lake
The most famous attraction in the area is Bayinbuluke Swan Lake, located within the grassland southwest of Bayin County. Despite its name, Swan Lake is actually an extensive wetland system consisting of numerous interconnected lakes, marshes and waterways.
It is one of the most important habitats for swans in China and was established as China’s first nature reserve specifically dedicated to the protection of swans.
The wetlands provide ideal nesting and feeding grounds for large numbers of waterbirds. During the warmer months, visitors may see swans swimming across the lakes, feeding in the shallow water or resting among the reeds and grass.

The Graceful Swans of Bayinbuluke
Bayinbuluke is particularly famous for its swans. Different species of swans and other waterbirds can be observed in the wetlands, making the area an important destination for birdwatchers and nature photographers.
The sight of white swans moving across the clear water is one of the most memorable experiences in Bayinbuluke. They can often be seen preening their feathers, searching for aquatic plants or swimming gracefully through the wetlands.
When feeding, swans frequently stretch or bend their long necks into the water, creating elegant curves against the surface. Large groups of birds gathering on the lakes and grasslands create a spectacular natural scene.
For local communities, swans have traditionally been regarded as symbols of purity, beauty and good fortune. Their peaceful presence has become an important part of the cultural identity of Bayinbuluke.

A Paradise for Birds
Swans are not the only birds found in Bayinbuluke. The extensive wetlands and grasslands provide habitats for many other species, with nearly 130 species of birds recorded in the region.
Depending on the season, visitors may encounter birds such as golden eagles, snowcocks and other birds of prey and migratory species.
Bayinbuluke lies along important migration routes, and the arrival of migratory birds adds another dimension to the area’s natural beauty. The wetlands provide essential resting and feeding grounds for birds during their long journeys.

Bayinbuluke National Nature Reserve
Bayinbuluke Grassland surrounded by snow mountainsBayinbuluke National Nature Reserve protects the important grassland and wetland ecosystems of the region. Its main conservation priorities include wetland habitats, rare birds and the broader biodiversity of the Tianshan highlands.
The reserve’s combination of rivers, lakes, marshes, grasslands and surrounding mountains creates a diverse ecological environment. The protected landscape is especially valuable for waterbirds and other wildlife that depend on wetlands.
For visitors, the reserve provides an opportunity to appreciate the delicate relationship between the highland grassland, wetlands and surrounding mountain environment.

Mongolian Culture and Nadam Festival
Bayinbuluke is also home to several ethnic communities, with Mongolian culture playing an especially important role in the local area. Traditional pastoral lifestyles, customs and festivals add a strong cultural dimension to a visit.
The annual Nadam Festival is particularly colorful. Traditional activities such as horse racing, wrestling and archery showcase the skills and traditions of the local Mongolian communities.
Visitors who travel to Bayinbuluke during the festival season can experience traditional music, costumes, horse culture and local celebrations, making the journey even more memorable.

Bayinbuluke in Summer
Summer is one of the best times to appreciate the beauty of Bayinbuluke Grassland. The meadows become lush and green, wildflowers bloom across the plains, and herds of horses, sheep and cattle can be seen grazing against the backdrop of the Tianshan Mountains.
The nearby Gongnaisi area is also known for its green valleys, clear streams and unusual rock formations covered with moss and vegetation. Its cool mountain environment makes it an attractive place to relax during the summer.
With its vast grasslands, snow-capped mountains, peaceful wetlands, graceful swans, abundant birdlife and distinctive Mongolian culture, Bayinbuluke offers a unique combination of nature and cultural experiences. It is one of the most rewarding destinations in Xinjiang for travelers seeking spectacular landscapes and authentic highland scenery.
