Baimaxueshan National Park is located in Deqin County in northwestern Yunnan Province, in the central section of the Hengduan Mountains and the northern part of the Yunling Mountains. The park is characterized by towering snow-covered peaks, deep valleys, glaciers, alpine forests and extensive highland grasslands.
With its dramatic mountain scenery and rich biodiversity, Baimaxueshan is one of the most remarkable wilderness areas in northwestern Yunnan and an important habitat for the rare Yunnan golden monkey.
A Land of High Snow-Capped Mountains
The landscape of Baimaxueshan is dominated by rugged mountains and deep valleys. Many of the major peaks rise above 4,000 meters, while numerous summits exceed 5,000 meters.
Among these mountains, Zalaqueni Peak is the highest, reaching an elevation of approximately 5,640 meters. Rising dramatically above the surrounding landscape, the snow-covered peak is one of the defining landmarks of the Baimaxueshan mountain range.
The combination of towering peaks, steep ridges and deep mountain valleys creates an impressive high-altitude landscape that is characteristic of the Hengduan Mountains.
Why Is It Called White Horse Snow Mountain?
The Chinese name Baimaxueshan literally means “White Horse Snow Mountain.”
According to local interpretation, the shape of Zalaqueni Peak resembles the head of a horse, while its snow-covered summit gives the impression of a white horse standing among the mountains.
This distinctive natural feature gave the mountain range its evocative name and adds a fascinating cultural story to its dramatic landscape.
A Remarkable Vertical Climate
Baimaxueshan has a highly varied climate because of its enormous differences in elevation.
The river valleys at lower elevations tend to be relatively warm and dry, while temperatures fall rapidly as the mountains rise. This vertical variation creates a series of distinct ecological zones, from dry valleys and forests to alpine meadows, glaciers and permanent snowfields.
The changing climate and elevation support a remarkable variety of vegetation. Lush forests cover many of the mountain slopes, while alpine grasslands and specialized high-altitude plants thrive closer to the snow line.
The Rare Yunnan Golden Monkey
One of the most important animals protected in Baimaxueshan is the Yunnan golden monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti), one of the world’s rarest primates and a species endemic to China.
The Yunnan golden monkey is mainly found in the high-altitude forests of the Hengduan Mountains in the border region of Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet. Because of its remote habitat and limited population, it is considered one of China’s most valuable protected mammals.
The species has dark or blackish fur and a distinctive appearance. Young monkeys may have lighter-colored fur, while adults develop darker coats. They also have long tails and distinctive upturned nostrils.
Living in remote mountain forests, Yunnan golden monkeys are highly adapted to cold, high-altitude environments. Their presence is an important indicator of the health of the mountain ecosystem.
A Wilderness of Forests, Glaciers and Lakes
Baimaxueshan National Park covers an enormous mountainous area, with forests making up a significant part of the landscape.
The scenery changes dramatically with elevation. Snow-covered peaks and glaciers dominate the highest mountains, while dense forests cover lower slopes. Alpine meadows spread across open mountain areas, and lakes and wetlands add further variety to the landscape.
In spring and summer, wildflowers bloom across the alpine meadows and around mountain lakes, creating colorful contrasts with the surrounding snow-covered peaks.
This combination of glaciers, forests, grasslands, lakes and wildflowers makes Baimaxueshan an outstanding destination for landscape photography and nature exploration.
Tibetan Culture and Historic Sites
The natural attractions of Baimaxueshan are complemented by the rich cultural heritage of northwestern Yunnan.
The surrounding region is home to Tibetan communities and numerous Buddhist temples. Traditional festivals can include Tibetan dances, local crafts, religious ceremonies and regional food, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the cultural traditions of the mountain communities.
The wider area also contains interesting natural and historical attractions, including lava caves, ancient stone carvings, hot springs and waterfalls.
These cultural and geological features make a journey through Baimaxueshan more than simply a mountain adventure.
Outdoor Activities
Baimaxueshan and its surrounding areas provide a variety of outdoor experiences. Depending on local conditions and permitted areas, visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, camping, picnicking, fishing and other nature-based activities.
The high-altitude environment and rugged terrain mean that visitors should be well prepared, particularly when traveling to remote mountain areas. Weather conditions can change quickly, and appropriate clothing and equipment are essential.
