Urumqi Travel Guide
Urumqi, meaning “beautiful pasture” in Mongolian, is the capital city of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Located north of the Tianshan Mountains, west of Bogda Mountain, and on the southeastern edge of the Junggar Basin, Urumqi is the largest city in Xinjiang and an important transportation hub connecting China with Central Asia.
Although Urumqi does not have as long a history as some ancient Silk Road cities, it serves as the ideal starting point for exploring Xinjiang’s spectacular landscapes, ethnic cultures, and historic sites. With its convenient transportation network and surrounding natural wonders, Urumqi is worth spending 1–2 days exploring.
Major Attractions in Urumqi
1. Tianchi Lake (Heavenly Lake)
Located about 110 kilometers east of Urumqi, Tianchi Lake is one of Xinjiang’s most famous natural attractions and a UNESCO-listed natural heritage site as part of the Tianshan mountain landscape.
The crescent-shaped alpine lake sits at an elevation of approximately 1,900 meters above sea level and reaches a depth of around 90 meters. Its crystal-clear waters are nourished by melting snow and ice from the surrounding mountains. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, dense spruce forests, and peaceful alpine scenery, Tianchi Lake is often described as a “pearl of the Tianshan Mountains.”
Visitors can enjoy a scenic boat ride across the lake, usually lasting around 40 minutes. On clear days, the magnificent Bogda Peak, rising 5,445 meters above sea level, can be seen reflected in the calm waters. The snow-covered peak and emerald-green forests create one of the most iconic landscapes in Xinjiang.
2. Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum
The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum is the best place to learn about Xinjiang’s rich history, diverse ethnic cultures, and role along the ancient Silk Road.
The museum houses a large collection of archaeological discoveries, historical relics, textiles, and cultural artifacts from different periods. One of its most famous exhibits is the collection of ancient mummies discovered in the Xinjiang region, which provides valuable insights into the history and cultural exchanges of Central Asia.

Several routes from Chengdu, Xi’an, and other Chinese cities also stop in Urumqi. Direct trains are available to major Xinjiang destinations such as Korla, Usu, Alataw Pass, and Kashgar.
