Tuyugou Canyon in Turpan
Located about 15 kilometers from the ancient ruins of Gaochang, Tuyugou Canyon (吐峪沟) is an 8-kilometer-long valley cutting through the Flaming Mountains. This peaceful canyon is a rare combination of spectacular desert scenery, traditional Uyghur villages, Islamic heritage, and ancient archaeological sites.
The canyon divides the Flaming Mountains into two sections and features a small stream running through the valley. Protected by the surrounding mountains, several Uyghur communities have preserved their traditional way of life for generations.
Tuyuk Village: A Traditional Uyghur Settlement
The most famous village in the canyon is Tuyuk Village, a place deeply connected with Uyghur religious and cultural traditions. Yanghai Tombs: Ancient Silk Road Archaeological Discovery
About 8 kilometers from Tuyugou Canyon lies the famous Yanghai Tombs, one of the most significant archaeological sites near Turpan.
The site became internationally known after the discovery of a well-preserved Caucasian mummy during excavations in 2008. The remains were identified as belonging to a person who lived approximately 2,700 years ago, providing valuable information about the ancient inhabitants, migration patterns, and cultural exchanges in the Turpan Basin.
Together with its ancient villages, religious sites, and archaeological treasures, Tuyugou Canyon offers travelers a deeper understanding of Xinjiang’s multicultural history and the rich heritage of the ancient Silk Road.
