Hotan Travel Guide
Located on the southern edge of the Tarim Basin and just north of the Kunlun Mountains, Hotan City is an ancient oasis city with a history deeply connected to the Silk Road. Known for its jade, Melikawat Ruins ancient Buddhist site in Hotan Xinjiangcarpets, traditional handicrafts, and Buddhist heritage, Hotan has long been an important cultural crossroads between China, Central Asia, South Asia, and the West.
Situated along the southern branch of the ancient Silk Road, Hotan served as a major meeting point where merchants, travelers, and scholars exchanged not only goods but also technologies, philosophies, religions, and ideas. Today, the city remains one of the most fascinating destinations in southern Xinjiang for travelers interested in history, archaeology, and local culture.
 
History and Cultural Heritage of Hotan
For thousands of years, Hotan was a key stop along the Silk Road. The oasis provided essential resources for travelers crossing the harsh deserts of Central Asia, while also becoming a center of Buddhist culture and artistic development.

Major Attractions in Hotan
 
1. Melikawat Ruins: Ancient Buddhist Heritage Site
Melikawat Ruins is the remains of an ancient and large Buddhist monastery located approximately 28 kilometers south of downtown Hotan.
Built along the Yorungkash River, the site was once an important Buddhist center. Over centuries, layers of river sediment buried much of the ancient settlement, leaving only fragments of the original structures visible above the desert plain.
Today, visitors can explore the remains of this mysterious archaeological site and imagine the prosperous Buddhist civilization that once flourished along the southern Silk Road.

Hotan Museum was established in 1995 and is one of the best places to understand the history and culture of the region.
The museum houses more than 9,000 cultural relics, most of which were discovered through archaeological research after 1949, while some were donated by local residents.
Covering an exhibition area of more than 3,400 square meters, the museum displays collections related to:

By Air
The most convenient way to reach Hotan is by air. Regular flights connect:
