Chaqiliq (Ruoqiang) Travel Guide
Located on the southeastern edge of the Tarim Basin and the Taklamakan Desert, Ruoqiang County (Chaqiliq ,若羌) is the largest county-level administrative area in China, covering approximately 199,222 square
kilometers—nearly twice the size of Zhejiang Province. It lies about 894 kilometers south of Urumqi and has long been an important crossroads between Xinjiang, the ancient Silk Road, and the Tibetan Plateau.
Ruoqiang has a history dating back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC–AD 220). In ancient times, it was the smallest of the 36 city-states of the Western Regions. Thanks to its strategic location, Ruoqiang played an important role in cultural and commercial exchanges between Central Asia and China. Today, the county is best known for its remarkable archaeological heritage, including three major national-level cultural heritage sites: Loulan Ancient City, Miran Ancient City, and Haitou Ancient City.
Major Attractions
1. Loulan Ancient City
Located approximately 260 kilometers northeast of Ruoqiang Town, Loulan Ancient City is the most famous archaeological site in the region. Once an important settlement along the ancient Silk Road, Loulan was eventually abandoned and buried beneath the desert. Its remote location, ruined structures, and mysterious history make it one of the most fascinating destinations for travelers interested in the ancient Silk Road.
2. Miran Ancient City
Miran Ancient City lies about 85 kilometers northwest of Ruoqiang Town. The site contains remains associated with the ancient Silk Road and provides valuable insights into the cultural exchanges that took place between the eastern and western regions of Central Asia.
3. Haitou Ancient City
Haitou Ancient City is another important archaeological site in the Ruoqiang area. Together with Loulan and Miran, it reflects the historical importance of the southern Silk Road and the civilizations that once flourished around the Tarim Basin.
Transportation
Ruoqiang was once an important settlement and trading center along the southern branch of the ancient Silk Road. Today, National Highway 218 and National Highway 315 pass through the county, providing road connections with other parts of Xinjiang and China.
Because Loulan, Miran, and Haitou are located in remote desert areas, access can be strictly controlled and may require advance permits and local arrangements. Travelers should confirm current access requirements and transportation conditions before visiting.
