Burqin Travel Guide
Located in northern Xinjiang, at the southwestern foothills of the Altai Mountains and the northern edge of the Junggar Basin, Burqin County (布尔津 ) is an important stopover for travelers heading to the world-famous Kanas Lake. With its beautiful natural scenery, ethnic culture, and convenient location, Burqin serves as a gateway to exploring the Altai region.
The county takes its name from the Burqin River. From the Western Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, this area was traditionally a nomadic region inhabited by various ethnic groups. In 1919, Altay officially became part of Xinjiang Province, marking a new stage in the region’s administrative history.
Climate of Burqin
Burqin has a typical continental climate, featuring dry and hot summers, cold winters, limited rainfall, and frequent winds. Due to its inland location, the temperature difference between day and night can be significant, so travelers are advised to prepare suitable clothing even during summer.
Kanas Lake
The highlight of Burqin tourism is Kanas Lake, one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Xinjiang. The name “Kanas” comes from the Mongolian language and is often interpreted as meaning “beautiful, rich, and mysterious.”
Located deep within the forests and mountains of the Altai region, Kanas Lake sits at an altitude of approximately 1,374 meters above sea level. Covering an area of about 45 square kilometers, the lake is known for its crystal-clear waters, surrounding snow-covered peaks, and dense primeval forests. Its deepest point reaches about 188 meters, making it one of the deepest alpine lakes in China.
The lake has a distinctive elongated shape, resembling a long bean, and perfectly reflects the surrounding mountains and forests. Autumn is considered the best season to visit, when the colorful foliage transforms the valley into a breathtaking landscape of golden forests, blue waters, and snow-capped peaks.
Kanas Lake is also famous for the legendary “Kanas Lake Monster.” Local stories claim that a mysterious creature inhabits the lake and occasionally pulls animals into the water, similar to the famous Loch Ness Monster legend. This mystery adds an extra sense of fascination to the already enchanting scenery.
Transportation
Burqin is an important transportation hub in the Altay region. National Highway 217 passes through the county, connecting it with other destinations in northern Xinjiang. Travelers can take sleeper buses between Urumqi and Burqin, and most visitors use Burqin as the starting point for trips to Kanas Lake and the surrounding scenic areas.
