Ruoergai Prairie
Located on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, spanning Sichuan and Gansu provinces, the Ruoergai Prairie (Zoige Wetlands 若尔盖大草原湿地) are among the largest high-altitude wetlands in China and one of the most important alpine wetland ecosystems in the world.
Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,400–3,900 meters, the wetlands cover around 10,000 square kilometers, including vast peat bogs, sedge marshes, lakes, and wet grasslands. The landscape is dotted with low hills and open alpine meadows, creating a spectacular natural environment on the plateau.
The area is also home to Tibetan pastoral communities, whose traditional lifestyle is closely connected with the grasslands. Local herders raise large numbers of sheep, yaks, horses, and goats, maintaining a centuries-old nomadic culture.
A Unique High-Altitude Wetland Ecosystem
The Ruoergai Marshes include several important protected areas, including:

* Shouqu Nature Reserve
Together with surrounding areas, they form one of the largest continuous high-altitude peatland regions remaining in China, covering approximately 5,000 square kilometers.

Wildlife Paradise of the Tibetan Plateau
The Ruoergai Marshes are an important habitat for many rare and endangered species.
The wetlands are especially famous as one of the world’s most important breeding and summering areas for the black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis), a rare bird species native to the Tibetan Plateau.
During summer, the area attracts approximately 600–900 black-necked cranes, including around 150–200 breeding pairs, making it a globally significant habitat for crane conservation.
