Zhujiajiao Ancient Town Shanghai famous Jiangnan water town
Located in the western suburbs of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town is one of the best-preserved traditional water towns in the Jiangnan region. Known as the “Venice of Shanghai” and the “Pearl Stream,” Zhujiajiao is famous for its picturesque canals, ancient bridges, historic streets, and well-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture.
With a history of more than 1,700 years, Zhujiajiao offers visitors a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle, culture, and commercial prosperity of ancient towns south of the Yangtze River.
 
A Historic Town with Over 1,700 Years of History
The history of Zhujiajiao can be traced back more than 1,700 years. Archaeological discoveries in the area have revealed ancient remains and tools dating back approximately 5,000 years, showing that this region has long been inhabited.
During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573–1620), Zhujiajiao officially developed into a town. Thanks to its convenient location along waterways, it gradually became an important commercial center in the Jiangnan area.
Historically, the town was known for its thriving rice trade and became an important distribution hub for agricultural products.
 
A Prosperous Water Town of Jiangnan
Zhujiajiao was once a flourishing market town, especially famous for its rice industry. Many historical commercial sites remain today, including:
* Ancient post offices
* Rice and oil shops
* Traditional banks
* Historic residences
* Former industrial buildings
The preserved streets and buildings reflect the economic prosperity of this ancient trading town.
 
The Beauty of Water and Ancient Architecture
Zhujiajiao is characterized by its unique Jiangnan water-town landscape.
The town covers an area of approximately 47 square kilometers and is crossed by numerous rivers and canals. Along the waterways are:
* Nine long riverside streets
* Thousands of Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings
* Thirty-six ancient stone bridges
The combination of flowing water, traditional houses, stone bridges, and small boats creates a peaceful scene often described as:
“Boats sailing on the water, people traveling in a painting.”

Fangsheng Bridge
The most famous landmark in Zhujiajiao is Fangsheng Bridge, also known as the Setting-Free Bridge.
Built during the Ming Dynasty, it is the largest ancient stone arch bridge in Shanghai. The five-arch bridge stretches gracefully across the river and has become an iconic symbol of the town.
Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the canals and traditional houses from the bridge.
 
North Street (Beidajie)
Known as “a mile-long road with a thousand shops,” North Street is one of the best-preserved ancient commercial streets in Zhujiajiao.
Walking along the stone-paved road, visitors can see:

* Old-style restaurants
The street reflects the former prosperity of Jiangnan trading towns.
 
Kezhi Garden
Kezhi Garden is a classic private garden representing the elegant lifestyle of wealthy families in southern China.

It demonstrates the refined aesthetics of Jiangnan garden culture.
 
Wang Chang Memorial Hall
The memorial hall honors Wang Chang, one of the famous “Seven Scholars” of the Qing Dynasty.
It provides insight into the literary traditions and cultural achievements of ancient Jiangnan scholars.
 
Traditional Food and Local Specialties
Zhujiajiao is not only famous for its scenery but also for its traditional local cuisine.
