Yuyuan Garden
Yuyuan Garden Shanghai famous Ming Dynasty classical garden
Located in the heart of Shanghai’s old city area, Yuyuan Garden (Yu Garden) is one of the most famous classical Chinese gardens in Shanghai. With a history of more than 400 years, this elegant garden represents the artistic achievements of Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) garden design and is considered one of the finest traditional gardens south of the Yangtze River.
The garden was originally built during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan, a government official who served as governor of Sichuan. He created the garden as a place to bring happiness and comfort to his parents and family, and the name “Yu” means “peace and pleasure.”
Today, Yuyuan Garden is a popular cultural attraction where visitors can experience traditional Chinese architecture, landscape design, and history in the bustling center of Shanghai.

History of Yuyuan Garden
Construction of Yuyuan Garden began in the Ming Dynasty and continued for many years before it became a magnificent private garden.
During its peak period, Yuyuan Garden was regarded as one of the most beautiful gardens in southeastern China. However, over the centuries, it experienced periods of decline and damage.
During the Small Sword Society Uprising in 1853, Yuyuan Garden became an important historical site. The Spring Hall inside the garden served as the headquarters of the uprising movement. Today, visitors can see historical exhibits including weapons, handmade coins, and announcements related to the movement.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the garden underwent extensive restoration and was officially opened to the public in 1961.

Highlights of Yuyuan Garden

Sansui Hall
Originally known as Leshou Hall, Sansui Hall was built during the Qing Dynasty with spacious rooms for receiving guests and holding important events.
The hall was once used for:
* Hosting distinguished visitors
* Celebrations
* Announcing imperial documents
Its traditional architecture reflects the elegance of ancient Chinese residential design.

Grand Rockery
The Grand Rockery is considered the greatest treasure of Yuyuan Garden and one of the finest rockeries in southern China.
Created by Zhang Nanyan, a famous Ming Dynasty rockery artist, the rockery reaches an impressive height and combines natural stones, plants, and architectural elements to create a dramatic landscape.
Visitors can climb the rockery to enjoy views of the surrounding garden and appreciate the traditional Chinese philosophy of harmony between humans and nature.

Yuyuan Garden Shanghai famous Ming Dynasty classical gardenExquisite Jade Rock
Located in front of Yuhua Hall, the Exquisite Jade Rock (Yulinglong) is one of the three most famous ornamental rocks in China.
The other two are:
* Ruiyun Rock in Lingering Garden, Suzhou
* Zhouyun Rock in Hangzhou Flower Nursery
The Exquisite Jade Rock is a rare Taihu Lake stone from Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. Standing about 4 meters high, it is admired for its unique features:
* Slender shape
* Transparent appearance
* Wrinkled texture
* Numerous natural holes formed by water erosion
According to tradition, the stone is considered especially beautiful because incense smoke burned beneath it could pass through the holes and emerge from the top.

Stone City
The Stone City is an exhibition area displaying various stone sculptures and carvings.
With its combination of artistic value and historical significance, it attracts visitors interested in traditional Chinese stone craftsmanship.

Architectural Beauty of Yuyuan Garden
Yuyuan Garden follows the traditional principles of Chinese landscape design, creating a perfect balance between natural scenery and man-made structures.
The garden features:
* Elegant pavilions
* Decorative windows
* Ancient bridges
* Rockeries
* Ponds
* Courtyards
* Traditional halls
Every section of the garden is carefully designed to create different views, following the classical Chinese idea that “one step brings one new scene.”
