Jade Buddha Temple
Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple Buddhist hall
Located in the bustling city of Shanghai, the Jade Buddha Temple (Yù Fó Sì, 玉佛寺) is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in China and a popular cultural attraction for visitors from around the world. The temple is renowned not for its grand architecture, but for its two precious white jade Buddha statues brought from Myanmar (Burma) in the late 19th century.
The temple was originally founded in 1882 to house two jade Buddha statues brought to China by a monk from Mount Putuo. After being damaged and abandoned following the 1911 Revolution, the temple was rebuilt on the same site between 1918 and 1928. Today, it serves as an active Chan (Zen) Buddhist monastery, welcoming both local worshippers and international visitors.

Precious Jade Buddha Statues
The main attraction of Jade Buddha Temple is its two exquisite jade statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha. Both statues were carved from white jade in Myanmar and are considered valuable examples of Buddhist art.
The most impressive statue is the seated Jade Buddha, which stands approximately 2 meters high and weighs around 205 kilograms. Decorated with colorful semi-precious stones, the statue presents a peaceful and solemn expression, reflecting the beauty and spiritual depth of Buddhist sculpture.
Another remarkable treasure is the reclining Jade Buddha, which is about 1 meter long. The statue depicts Buddha resting peacefully, symbolizing the moment of entering nirvana. In addition to the original reclining Buddha, another reclining Buddha statue was donated by a Singapore Buddhist believer in 1989 and is also preserved in the temple.

Main Halls and Buddhist Architecture
Although the temple buildings are relatively modern, they were constructed in a traditional Song Dynasty architectural style, featuring elegant halls, courtyards, and Buddhist decorations.
The main buildings inside Jade Buddha Temple include the Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings, the Grand Hall, the Abbot’s Room, the Jade Buddha Chamber, and a public restaurant.

Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings
The Hall of the Four Heavenly Kings is located near the entrance of the temple. The three red gates symbolize the Buddhist idea of freeing oneself from worldly attachments. Inside the hall are statues of Maitreya Buddha and the Four Heavenly Kings, who represent protection, prosperity, and favorable conditions.

Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple Buddhist hallGrand Hall
The Grand Hall is the central worship area of the temple and houses the Three Golden Buddhas. In the center is Shakyamuni Buddha, while Bhaisajyaguru Buddha (the Medicine Buddha) is placed on the right and Amitabha Buddha on the left.
At the northern entrance of the hall stands a statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Guanyin) accompanied by her two disciples.

Jade Buddha Chamber
The Jade Buddha Chamber is located on the second floor and houses the famous seated Jade Buddha. The chamber also contains more than 7,000 volumes of valuable Buddhist scriptures preserved in cabinets on both sides of the statue.
The first floor contains the Abbot’s Room, where a portrait of Shakyamuni Buddha is displayed.

A Spiritual Landmark in Shanghai
With its precious jade Buddha statues, peaceful atmosphere, and long Buddhist tradition, Jade Buddha Temple has become one of Shanghai’s most important religious and cultural landmarks. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience Chinese Buddhist culture while exploring the modern city of Shanghai.
For travelers interested in history, religion, architecture, and traditional Chinese culture, Jade Buddha Temple is a must-visit attraction in Shanghai.
