Shapotou Desert Scenic Area
Golden sand dunes at Shapotou Tengger Desert ChinaLocated in Zhongwei City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Shapotou Scenic Area is a spectacular destination where the Yellow River meets the Tengger Desert. Situated on the northern bank of the Yellow River at the southeastern edge of the desert, Shapotou lies about 150 kilometers south of Yinchuan City.
Known as the “Capital of Sand”, Shapotou is recognized as one of the most beautiful desert landscapes in China. Standing on the top of the sand dunes, visitors can admire the endless Tengger Desert stretching to the north and a vast green oasis along the Yellow River to the south.
This unique landscape combines the grandeur of northern China with the elegance of southern scenery, making Shapotou one of the most popular attractions in Ningxia.

A Unique Combination of Desert, River and Culture
Shapotou is not only famous for its natural beauty but also for its rich cultural heritage. The area preserves traces of ancient Yellow River civilization, including sections of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall and traditional water management facilities.
Visitors can experience a variety of desert and river activities while exploring the harmony between nature and human creativity.

Yellow River Drift on a Sheepskin Raft
One of the most distinctive experiences at Shapotou is floating along the Yellow River on a traditional sheepskin raft.
This simple but unique form of transportation has been used by local people for generations. Although the experience is exciting, skilled boatmen ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.
During the rafting trip, visitors can enjoy:
* Beautiful Yellow River scenery
* Views of ancient Great Wall ruins
Shapotou Scenic Area with Tengger Desert and Yellow River Ningxia* Traditional Yellow River culture
* Historic waterwheel sites
The rafting experience offers a fascinating way to discover the relationship between local communities and the Yellow River.

Sand Slide — Experience the Singing Sands
The Shapotou International Sand Slide Center is one of the largest natural sand sliding areas in China and one of the country’s famous “sounding sand” fields.
The sand slope reaches approximately:
* 1,000 meters in length
* More than 100 meters in height
* Around 60 degrees in slope
When visitors slide down the dunes, the moving sand creates a mysterious sound similar to a deep ringing bell. This rare natural phenomenon makes sand sliding at Shapotou an exciting and unforgettable desert adventure.

Yellow River Cableway Slide
The Yellow River Cableway Slide is another highlight of Shapotou. Known as the first Yellow River cableway slide in China, it allows visitors to cross above the Yellow River while enjoying thrilling speed and breathtaking views.
The cableway:
* Extends about 820 meters
* Reaches around 54 meters above the river
* Moves at an average speed of approximately 8 meters per second
Unlike many modern rides, the cableway operates mainly through gravity, creating a unique adventure experience.

Desert Adventures and Cultural Experiences
Beyond sand activities and river adventures, Shapotou offers many ways to explore the desert landscape.
Visitors can enjoy:
* Camel riding across the Tengger Desert
* Watching sunrise over the dunes
* Admiring sunset along the Yellow River
* Staying overnight in a Mongolian-style camp
* Joining bonfire parties and ethnic performances
* Taking a yacht ride on the Yellow River
For travelers seeking a more relaxed experience, Shapotou also provides opportunities to learn about local desert control projects and ecological protection efforts.

Visit Shapotou — A Must-See Attraction in Ningxia
With its spectacular combination of desert dunes, the Yellow River, ancient culture, and exciting outdoor activities, Shapotou Scenic Area represents the unique landscape and spirit of northwest China.
Whether you are looking for adventure, photography, cultural experiences, or natural scenery, Shapotou is an unforgettable destination during a Ningxia journey.
