Day 1: Luoyang City Tour (L, Lunch)
In the morning, your private guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the Longmen Grottoes, one of the most remarkable collections of ancient Buddhist art in China. The grottoes flourished particularly during the Tang Dynasty, when Luoyang was an important imperial capital. You will explore the caves and niches along the cliffs and admire thousands of beautifully carved Buddhist statues, inscriptions, and stone reliefs.
In the afternoon, continue your Luoyang sightseeing tour with a visit to White Horse Temple, traditionally regarded as the first Buddhist temple established in China. Founded during the Eastern Han Dynasty, the temple played an important role in the early development and spread of Buddhism in China. Explore its historic halls, courtyards, and peaceful gardens while learning about the history of Buddhism in China.
Next, visit Guanlin Temple, a historic temple associated with Guan Yu, a famous general from the Three Kingdoms period. Guan Yu has traditionally been revered as a symbol of loyalty, righteousness, and integrity, and his worship has become an important part of Chinese folk culture. A visit to Guanlin offers an interesting insight into the traditional Chinese values and beliefs surrounding this legendary figure.
In the late afternoon, head to Luoyang Old Town for a relaxing walk through its historic streets. Explore traditional architecture, browse local shops, and try some authentic Luoyang snacks. The old streets offer a lively atmosphere and provide a glimpse into the city’s long history and local lifestyle.
After the tour, return to your hotel in Luoyang for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Luoyang – Shaolin Temple – Zhengzhou (L, Lunch)
After breakfast, meet your guide and driver and drive for approximately one hour to Shaolin Temple, located at the foot of Songshan Mountain. Shaolin Temple is widely regarded as the birthplace of Shaolin Kung Fu and is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in China.
Upon arrival, explore the historic temple complex and learn about the connection between Chan Buddhism and Chinese martial arts. Depending on the day’s performance schedule, you may also have the opportunity to watch Shaolin monks or martial artists demonstrate traditional Kung Fu techniques.
You will also visit the Pagoda Forest (Talin), an impressive collection of ancient pagodas built as memorials for generations of eminent Shaolin monks. The pagodas vary in size, shape, and architectural style, creating one of the most distinctive sights within the Shaolin Temple complex.
After lunch, continue your journey to Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province. Depending on your onward travel arrangements, you will be transferred to Zhengzhou Railway Station for your bullet train or to the airport for your next destination.
