The grottoes and niches of Longmen contain the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art of the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316-907). These works, entirely devoted to the Buddhist religion, represent the high point of Chinese stone carving. Along with the Mogao Caves and Yungang Grottoes, the Longmen Grottoes are one of the three most famous ancient sculptural sites in China. There are over 2100 niches, more than 100,000 statues, some 40 pagodas and 3600 tablets and steles in the caves of Guyang, Binyang and Lianhua.

Day 1: Longmen Grottoes & Eastern Zhou Royal Horse and Chariot Pits (L, Lunch)
In the morning, your private guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the Longmen Grottoes, one of China’s most important ancient Buddhist art sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved into the limestone cliffs along the Yi River, the grottoes contain thousands of Buddhist statues, inscriptions, niches, and stone carvings dating from different periods of Chinese history.
As you explore the grottoes, you will see beautifully preserved sculptures ranging from small figures to monumental Buddha statues. The site reached its artistic peak during the Tang Dynasty, when Luoyang was one of the most important cities in China.
After the visit, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and try some traditional Luoyang cuisine.
In the afternoon, visit the Museum of Luoyang Eastern Zhou Royal Horse and Chariot Pits, located in the center of Luoyang at the site of the former Eastern Zhou Royal City. The museum is best known for its large-scale sacrificial horse and chariot pits dating from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770–256 BC).
Walk around the museum and view the archaeological remains of ancient horse-drawn chariots and horses. The site provides a fascinating insight into the burial customs, rituals, transportation, and royal culture of ancient China.
In the late afternoon, head to Luoyang Old Town for a leisurely walk through its historic streets. Explore traditional buildings, local shops, and street-food stalls while experiencing the lively atmosphere of the old city. The area offers a glimpse into Luoyang’s long history and its importance as an ancient Chinese capital, particularly during the Sui and Tang dynasties.
