Xian Drum Tower

Xi'an Drum Tower Ming Dynasty landmark China

Xi’an Drum Tower (西安鼓楼), built in 1380 during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), is one of the most famous historical landmarks in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. Located in the heart of the city center, it stands opposite the Xi’an Bell Tower, its famous companion, with a distance of only about 200 meters between them.
Together, the Bell Tower and Drum Tower of Xi’an represent one of the best-preserved examples of ancient Chinese timekeeping architecture and are among the most iconic attractions in the ancient capital of China.

History of Xi’an Drum Tower
The Drum Tower was originally constructed in 1380 during the early Ming Dynasty and was later renovated twice during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911).
In ancient China, the Bell Tower and Drum Tower served an important practical function. The large bell in the Bell Tower was struck in the morning to announce the beginning of the day, while the drum in the Drum Tower was beaten in the evening and at night to mark the passing of time.
The sound of the bell and drum could be heard throughout the old city of Xi’an, helping residents organize their daily activities.
To ensure that the drumbeats reached all corners of the city, the tower was built at a height of approximately 34 meters, making it one of the most prominent structures in ancient Xi’an.

Architecture of Xi’an Drum Tower
Similar to the nearby Bell Tower, Xi’an Drum Tower is a classic example of traditional Chinese architecture combining wood, brick, and decorative craftsmanship.
The tower stands on a large rectangular brick platform:
* Length: approximately 52.6 meters
* Width: approximately 38 meters
* Height: approximately 7.7 meters
A passageway runs through the base, allowing pedestrians and vehicles to pass underneath.
Stone stairs outside the platform lead visitors to the main tower, which is a two-story wooden structure featuring:
* Exquisite painted decorations
* Traditional Chinese architectural details
* A green glazed-tile roof
Standing on the platform, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of central Xi’an and the surrounding historic district.

Xi'an Drum Tower Ming Dynasty landmark ChinaThe Famous Plaques of Xi’an Drum Tower
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, two large wooden plaques with Chinese inscriptions were displayed on different sides of the second floor of the Drum Tower.
Unfortunately, the original plaques were destroyed in the 1970s. In order to restore the historical appearance of the tower, the Xi’an municipal government began research and restoration work in 1982.
After years of studying historical records and consulting local experts, the plaques were successfully recreated in 2004 using traditional techniques combined with modern materials.
Today, these restored plaques once again add to the cultural charm of the Drum Tower.

The Giant Drum of Xi’an Drum Tower
One of the most impressive features of the Drum Tower is its enormous traditional drum.
As part of a major restoration project in the 1990s, a giant drum was installed inside the tower to revive the ancient tradition of “morning bell and evening drum.”
The drum features:
* Diameter: approximately 2.83 meters
* Weight: about 1.5 tons
* Material: Oxhide
* 1,996 decorative nails
* Four copper rings
The restored drum has become one of the highlights for visitors exploring Xi’an’s ancient cultural heritage.

Bell and Drum Tower Square
The area between Xi’an Drum Tower and Bell Tower has been transformed into the Bell and Drum Towers Square, a popular leisure area in downtown Xi’an.
The square features:
* Green landscapes
* Beautiful fountains
* Nighttime light displays
* Views of both historic towers
At night, the illuminated towers create one of the most attractive scenes in Xi’an and are popular locations for photography.

Why Visit Xi’an Drum Tower?
Xi’an Drum Tower is more than an ancient building; it is a symbol of the city’s long history as the capital of several Chinese dynasties.
Located near the Muslim Quarter, the Bell Tower, and other major attractions, it is an essential stop for travelers exploring Xi’an.
Visitors can experience:
* Ming Dynasty architecture
* Ancient Chinese traditions
* Historic city landscapes
* Traditional cultural performances
For anyone visiting Xi’an, the Drum Tower provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily life, technology, and culture of ancient China.
