The Longmen Grottoes
Located about 15 kilometers south of Luoyang City, Henan Province, the Longmen Grottoes are one of China’s most important ancient Buddhist art sites. Situated between Mount Longmen and Mount Xiang along the banks of the Yi River, the grottoes form a magnificent cultural landscape featuring thousands of Buddhist statues, stone inscriptions, and historic caves carved into the cliffs.
Together with the Yungang Grottoes and Mogao Caves, the Longmen Grottoes are regarded as one of China’s three greatest treasure houses of ancient Buddhist stone carvings and inscriptions. They represent the outstanding achievements of Chinese Buddhist art, sculpture, and calligraphy throughout history.
A History of More Than 1,400 Years
Construction of the Longmen Grottoes began during the Northern Wei Dynasty under the reign of Emperor Xiaowen (approximately 493 AD) and continued through several dynasties, including the Tang and Song dynasties. The carving work lasted for more than 400 years, creating one of the most impressive collections of Buddhist art in the world.
Today, the Longmen Grottoes include more than 1,352 caves, 785 niches, over 97,000 Buddhist statues, and approximately 3,680 stone inscriptions spread along the cliffs of Mount Longmen on the west bank of the Yi River and Mount Xiang on the east bank.
The site provides valuable insight into the development of Chinese Buddhism, ancient sculpture techniques, and the artistic achievements of different historical periods.
Highlights of Longmen Grottoes
Among the countless treasures of Longmen, visitors can admire exquisite Buddhist sculptures, flying Apsaras (celestial beings), and remarkable examples of ancient Chinese calligraphy. The famous Twenty Calligraphic Samples of Longmen are considered masterpieces of Chinese calligraphy and are important representatives of the Northern Wei Dynasty’s writing style.
The most iconic artwork at Longmen Grottoes is the Vairocana Buddha Statue in Fengxian Temple. Standing 17 meters high, this magnificent statue is the largest and most representative sculpture in the grotto complex. With its graceful expression and impressive craftsmanship, it reflects the peak of Tang Dynasty Buddhist sculpture.
