The Origin of Dengfeng’s Name
The name Dengfeng has a special connection with Mount Songshan. It literally means “ascending Mount Songshan and granting it a title as the Middle Heaven King.”
The city received this name from Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Unlike many Chinese emperors who traditionally performed ceremonies on Mount Tai, Empress Wu Zetian visited Mount Songshan and honored it as a “Holy Mountain.” Historical records state that she climbed Mount Songshan ten times during her reign.
How to Travel from Luoyang to Shaolin Temple
At present, traveling by road is the main way to reach Shaolin Temple from Luoyang.
Option 1: Private Car or Taxi
For a more comfortable and convenient trip, visitors can pre-book a taxi or rent a private car through a local travel agency in Luoyang. A round trip usually costs around RMB 600.
This option is ideal for travelers who prefer flexibility and want to combine Shaolin Temple with other Dengfeng attractions in one day.
Option 2: Public Bus from Luoyang
For budget travelers and those who want a more local experience, taking a long-distance bus is a good choice.
* Go to Luoyang Long-distance Bus Station, located opposite Luoyang Railway Station in the city center.
* Purchase a bus ticket from Luoyang to Shaolin Temple.
* Many buses pass directly by Shaolin Temple.
Most Shaolin Temple-bound buses travel along National Highway No. 207, and the temple is located about 80 kilometers from Luoyang along the route.
Visitors should note that these buses often operate as local shuttle buses, stopping at villages along the highway. If passengers wave from the roadside and seats are available, the driver may stop to pick them up.
