Sangke Grassland

Sangke GrasslandLying at an average altitude of over 3,000m above sea level, Sangke Grassland is situated a short 14km from Xiahe. This vast expanse of grassy plains, covering an area of around 70 square kilometers, is a lonely, beautiful place that is a nice change for those from bustling Chengdu or Lanzhou. There are only 4,000 Tibetan nomads on the grasslands, all wrapped up in their many, dirty layers, who graze yak herds and offer tourists the chance of a ride upon their horses. Entertainment here varies according to your preference. Botanists and hikers will be happy to just set off into the rolling hills, but for those after a little more exciting the horse rides, costing around RMB25, are good fun. Food here consists of a very Tibetan affair with courses and beverages such as yak butter tea, chang, Tibetan buns and the famous "Hand Held Mutton" (Shouzhua yangrou). Nighttime is for Tibetan and Western singing and dancing with the locals, until the bonfire crackles low and your Tibetan yurt be cons.

Located 1 km southwest of Xiahe County, Sangke Grassland belongs to the Dajiu flatland (Horse-racing flatland) in the Sangke Township. Embraced by mountain of each side, it is fertile alpine grassland famous for its verdant grass and beautiful scenery with blue sky, fluffy clouds, vast lush grassland dotted with herds of sleep and cattle.

Sangke Grassland covers a total area of 70 square kilometers or so and its average altitude is over 300 meters. It has always been a pastureland of the Tibetan people. In summer, it looks like an endless natural green blanket. And there are endless wild flowers which are booming and attractive on the great tableland. The serpentine Daxia River runs though Sangke Grassland, which seems like a piece of Tibetan belt waving down on the natural green blanket. Around the water and Sangke electricity station, there is clear water with popples waving slightly and the bottom of the water can be seen clearly. There is a beautiful poetic picture with reflections of blue sky and white clouds connected with the clear water around the water and electricity station.

Sangke GrasslandTand features abundant water and grass with beautiful scenery and under the white-clouded blue sky, herds of sheep and cows are grazing, and camps are scattered everywhere like stars in the sky on the wide endless natural green blanket a perfect place of natural scenes for enjoying a pastoral life. In recent years, Sangke Grassland has attracts lots of tourists from all over the world for its Tibetan amorous feelings.

There are special lodging camps to accommodate travelers and the travelers will taste all kinds of local special food and drink like milk tea, Tibetan glutinous rice dough and mutton which are eaten with hand directly and not with any chopsticks, knives or forks. Travelers also have chances to wear peculiar Tibetan clothes and ride horses or yaks to walk or run on the grassland and appreciate customs of Tibetan herdsmen deeply and completely.

Admission fee: RMB 3/person

Opening hours: Unsure

Transportation

You can take a bus from Mulan to Xiahe County, it will cost you about RMB 20. After arrival, charter a bus to get to the grassland directly.
