Jiayu Pass
Jiayu Pass in Gansu provinceLocated in the southwest part of Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province, Jiayuguan Pass (Jiayu Pass) is one of the most famous and best-preserved sections of the Great Wall of China. Known as the “First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven”, it was a vital military fortress and an important gateway connecting ancient China with the Western Regions and the Silk Road.
Surrounded by dramatic natural landscapes, with the snow-covered Qilian Mountains stretching to the south and the Longshou Mountains and Mazong Mountains rising to the north, Jiayuguan Pass stands at a strategically important location between mountains and desert.
As the western starting point of the existing Ming Dynasty Great Wall, Jiayuguan represents the boundary between ancient Chinese civilization and the vast lands of Central Asia.

History of Jiayuguan Pass
The present structure of Jiayuguan Pass was built in 1372 during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) under the supervision of General Feng Sheng, shortly after the establishment of the Ming Empire.
During ancient times, the Hexi Corridor was a crucial route linking China with the Western Regions. Jiayuguan controlled access to this corridor and played an important role in:
* Military defense
* Border control
* Trade along the Silk Road
* Cultural exchanges between East and West
Travelers, merchants, diplomats, and military forces all passed through this legendary gateway on their journeys westward.

Architecture of Jiayuguan Pass
The existing Jiayuguan Pass is a magnificent example of ancient Chinese defensive architecture.
The fortress has a square layout with a total circumference of approximately 733 meters. It consists of:
* An inner city
* An outer city
* Strong defensive walls
* Watchtowers and gates
The outer walls were mainly constructed with rammed earth, while the western section was reinforced with bricks. The use of double walls reflects the strategic importance of the pass and its role as a major military stronghold.
The fortress was designed to withstand attacks from the desert frontier while controlling movement along the Silk Road.

Jiayuguan Pass and the Great Wall of China
Jiayuguan Pass is famous as the western end of the existing Ming Great Wall.
From Jiayuguan, the Great Wall extends eastward across:
* Deserts
* Mountain ridges
* Plains
* Northern China landscapes
Eventually, it reaches the coast of eastern Liaoning Province, covering a distance of more than 5,000 kilometers.
Unlike the famous stone sections near Beijing, the Great Wall around Jiayuguan was mainly built using rammed earth and local materials due to the dry desert environment.

Highlights of Jiayuguan Pass

First Pier of the Great Wall
Known as the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall along the Jiayuguan defense system, this site stands beside the dramatic Gobi Desert and the Taolai River.

Jiayuguan Pass and the Silk Road
Jiayuguan was not only a military fortress but also an important stop on the ancient Silk Road.
Beyond the pass lay the Western Regions, including areas that are now part of:
* Xinjiang
* Central Asia
* Further regions connected with Europe and the Middle East
Through this gateway, goods, religions, technologies, and ideas traveled between China and the outside world.
