Bingling Si Rock Carving Temple
Bingling Temple is located in the Xiao Jishi Shan Mountain, 35 kilometers southwest of 
Yongjing County, Gansu Province. It takes 75 kilometers from Lanzhou, then reaches Liujiaxia Hydropower Station dam, and then need to transfer to the boat via the wide lake turn to the west, and crosses the sister peak.
Bingling Temple has a long history and has been a holy place of Buddhism since ancient times. It can also be called a holy land of Taoism. Since 420 AD, it has a history of more than 1,600 years. From Song Dynasty, Sui Dynasty to Tang Dynasty, Chinese Han people style Buddhism had a great influence on Bingling Temple. In the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty, the Yellow School (Gelupa) of Tibetan Buddhism was introduced into Bingling Temple. On the basis of inheriting the folk art of the previous generation, Bingling Temple Grottoes absorb and integrate the foreign Buddhist art, and create a vivid sculpture image and painting art with a new attitude and concise technique.
The most typical grottoes of Bingling Temple are stone statues, relief carved pagodas and metric murals, which are known with the Mogao Grottoes and the three grottoes in Gansu Province.
The grottoes of Bingling Temple are divided into three places: Upper Temple, Donggou valley and down Temple, which are distributed on the red sandstone on both sides of the temple. The caves are stacked and the plank road twists and turns up. The following temples are the most spectacular. The biggest characteristic is mainly stone carving, and the central Plains culture stone carving occupies an important position.
The Bingling Temple Grottoes are located on the cliffs of 200 meters long and 60 meters high in Jishishan mountain. Right now there are 196 grottoes and niches remained, with 694 stone statues, 82 clay sculptures, and more than 900 square meters of murals. The largest Tang Dynasty Maitreya Sitting Buddha is 27 meters high, and the smallest statue is 10 centimeters high.
