Beijing yandaixie Street Hutong
Yandaixie Street (which literally means Slanted Tobacco Pipe Street), adjacent to Shishahai, is the oldest byway in Beijing located north of Di'anmen. It is one of the hutongs tourists should not miss. Yandaixiejie is not a quite long hutong but a very good hutong to explore old Beijing and experience hutong culture. Meanwhile it is also a good place to taste Beijing snacks and shopping for antique stuffs such as silk products, tea, teapots, traditional Chinese garments, artistic works, and handcraft, ect.
The street, about 300 meters long, stretches in both east-west and north-south directions. At the dawn of Ming Dynasty (1368), it was called Dayuting Dongjie (Fishing Hall East Street).Its name comes from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Manchu elites living in the northern part of the city were largely addicted to tobacco, which boosted the tobacco industry in Beijing. Smokers were generally keen on possessing a fine tobacco pipe, seeing this trend, local residents on the byway established tobacco pipe shops. Gradually, the fame of the byway spread far and wide, hence the name "Yandaixie Street". Better still, the street itself looks very much like a tobacco pipe with the 300-meter-long street resembling the pipe and the east entrance resembling a pipe mouth.
Following the fall of the Qing Dynasty (1911), royal and noble families all went bankrupt and were reduced to selling their antiques feverishly sought after by the new elite and ultra-rich businessmen. Hence, Yandaixie Street emerged as a base for antique dealers establishing a number of antique and jade shops. The simple yet elegant architectural style here, and the strong flavor of Old Beijing explains how deeplyolder Beijingers are attached to it.
The best time to go to Yandaixie Street is at dusk or in the evening. Entering the street, you will immediately feel different. Here, teahouses, cafes, bars, craft shops, foreign trading clothing stores, snack shops and tobacco shops closely line the sides of the street.
