The First Buddhism Mountain Emeishan
Mount Emei sea of cloudsMount Emei, also known as Emeishan, is located in the southern part of the Sichuan Basin in southwestern China. It is one of China’s Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and is renowned for its magnificent natural scenery, rich Buddhist heritage and diverse wildlife. The name “Emei” is traditionally associated with the shape of two mountain peaks that resemble the delicate eyebrows of a woman. The Emei mountain range stretches across a vast area, creating a spectacular landscape of towering peaks, deep valleys and dense forests.

A Sacred Buddhist Mountain
Buddhism was introduced to Mount Emei as early as the 1st century AD, and Buddhist temples and monasteries were gradually built throughout the mountain. Today, Mount Emei is home to numerous temples and monasteries and is regarded as an important center of Buddhist culture and worship dedicated to Samantabhadra, known in Chinese as Puxian.
With its combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage, Mount Emei has earned several poetic titles, including the “Kingdom of Plants,” “Paradise of Animals,” “Geological Museum” and “Buddhist Celestial Mountain.” It is particularly celebrated for the magnificent scenery of Mount Emei, which changes dramatically with the seasons and elevation.

The Four Wonders of Mount Emei
Mount Emei is famous for four spectacular natural phenomena: the Golden Summit Sunrise, Sea of Clouds, Buddha’s Halo and Holy Lights. These remarkable sights, together with the mountain’s ancient temples and forests, make Emeishan one of Sichuan’s most popular destinations for nature lovers, hikers and Buddhist pilgrims.
Major attractions include Baoguo Temple, Fuhu Temple, Leiyin Temple and the Golden Summit. In 1996, Mount Emei and the Leshan Giant Buddha were inscribed together on the UNESCO World Heritage List for their outstanding cultural and natural significance.
The mountain offers a remarkable change of climate and scenery with increasing altitude. Along the route from the lower slopes to the summit, visitors can experience significant differences in temperature, vegetation and weather. Those who hike the mountain may encounter Buddhist pilgrims making their way steadily toward the summit, adding a unique cultural dimension to the journey.
Wild monkeys can also be encountered in some areas of Mount Emei. Although they are accustomed to visitors, travelers should avoid feeding or provoking them and should keep food and personal belongings secure.

Golden Summit of Mount Emei in SichuanA Geological and Ecological Treasure
Mount Emei features remarkably diverse terrain, ranging from high peaks and steep cliffs to deep valleys and forested slopes. Its varied landscapes are closely related to the region’s complex geological structure. The mountain contains important geological formations, including the famous Emeishan basalt formed during the Late Permian period, which is of considerable significance to geological studies.
The mountain is also exceptionally rich in plant and animal life. Different vegetation zones appear at different elevations, creating a wide range of habitats. This ecological diversity is one of the defining features of Emeishan and contributes to its reputation as a “Kingdom of Plants” and “Paradise of Animals.”

Buddha’s Halo and Holy Lights

1. Buddha’s Halo
The Buddha’s Halo is one of Mount Emei’s most famous natural phenomena. It is an optical phenomenon that can occur when sunlight interacts with clouds containing tiny water droplets or ice crystals. Under suitable conditions, the shadow of a person or object may appear against the clouds, surrounded by a circular rainbow-like halo.
This phenomenon requires a particular combination of sunlight, clouds, viewing angle and atmospheric conditions, so it cannot be seen every day. When it appears, however, it creates an extraordinary and memorable sight around the summit.

2. Holy Lights
The Holy Lights are another mysterious phenomenon traditionally associated with Mount Emei. They are sometimes described as small points or balls of light appearing in the darkness below the cliffs and moving through the surrounding mist.
The phenomenon has inspired numerous legends and religious interpretations over the centuries. Although its exact appearance depends on atmospheric and viewing conditions, the Holy Lights remain one of the most fascinating aspects of Mount Emei’s natural and spiritual landscape.

Baoguo Temple
Baoguo Temple is one of the most important temples at the foot of Mount Emei and serves as an important gateway to the mountain. The temple was originally built during the Ming Dynasty, later expanded and renovated, and has become an important Buddhist and cultural site.
The temple complex contains a number of notable cultural treasures, including a large porcelain Buddha, a multi-story bronze tower and a massive bronze bell. Visitors can also enjoy the peaceful temple gardens and landscaped surroundings, which provide a pleasant introduction to the cultural atmosphere of Mount Emei.

Golden Summit
The Golden Summit is one of the most iconic attractions on Mount Emei and is located at a high elevation near the top of the mountain. From the summit, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views across the surrounding mountains and, when weather conditions are favorable, a spectacular sea of clouds stretching toward the horizon.
Standing above the clouds, the Golden Summit and its Buddhist buildings create an unforgettable landscape. When sunlight illuminates the temples and surrounding peaks, the scene can resemble a group of mysterious Buddhist palaces floating above the clouds.
Mount Emei is located approximately 150 kilometers from Chengdu and is easily accessible as part of a Sichuan travel itinerary. Its proximity to Chengdu and Leshan makes it convenient to combine a visit to Mount Emei with other major attractions in Sichuan, including the Leshan Giant Buddha.
With its sacred Buddhist traditions, ancient temples, spectacular mountain scenery, rich biodiversity and extraordinary natural phenomena, Mount Emei offers a unique combination of culture and nature. Whether visiting for pilgrimage, hiking, sightseeing or simply enjoying the famous sea of clouds at the Golden Summit, Emeishan provides one of the most memorable mountain experiences in China.
