Gongga Mountain - The King of Su Mountains

Mount Gongga snow peak and glaciers in SichuanGongga Mountain Nature Reserve is located in the western part of Sichuan Province, covering areas of Kangding, Luding, Jiulong and Shimian counties. Covering approximately 400,000 hectares, the reserve protects a remarkable combination of snow-covered mountains, modern glaciers, virgin forests, alpine ecosystems, rare wildlife and other natural resources.
At the heart of the reserve stands Mount Gongga, the highest mountain in Sichuan Province. Rising to 7,556 meters above sea level, it is widely known as the “King of the Mountains of Sichuan.”

Mount Gongga: The King of Sichuan’s Mountains
Mount Gongga lies in the transitional region between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Sichuan Basin. Its enormous elevation and dramatic terrain create one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in western China.
The summit remains covered with snow and ice throughout the year. From a distance, the mountain appears to rise above an immense sea of snow, with glaciers flowing down its steep slopes.
The surrounding reserve contains an extraordinary variety of landscapes, including:
* Snow-covered peaks
* Modern glaciers
* Ancient glacial relics
* Alpine lakes
* Virgin forests
* Hot springs
* Deep mountain valleys
* High-altitude grasslands
This combination of geological and ecological features makes Gongga Mountain an outstanding destination for nature lovers, photographers and outdoor enthusiasts.

A Remarkable Vertical Ecosystem
One of the most fascinating characteristics of Gongga Mountain is the dramatic change in vegetation with altitude.
The eastern and southern slopes contain a remarkably complete sequence of vegetation zones, ranging from subtropical forests at lower elevations to alpine and frigid vegetation near the mountain summit.
The western and northern slopes feature extensive alpine and high-altitude vegetation, interspersed with ecosystems found in deep mountain valleys.
This exceptional vertical diversity is related to the region’s complex geography and the long-term uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. As a result, the reserve contains ancient plant groups, diverse ecosystems and numerous specialized species.

Gongga Mountain Nature Reserve is an important center of biodiversity in southwestern China.
The reserve contains thousands of species of vascular plants, including numerous rare and protected species. Its forests include a variety of temperate and alpine plants adapted to the dramatic changes in altitude and climate.
The region is also home to a remarkable range of wildlife. Rare mammals found in the broader Gongga Mountain region include white-lipped deer, golden snub-nosed monkeys, wild yaks, snow leopards, lynx and other protected species.
The coexistence of extensive forests, alpine meadows, glaciers and mountain valleys provides habitats for wildlife at different elevations.

An Important Center of Biodiversity
The extraordinary biological diversity of Gongga Mountain has given the reserve considerable scientific and conservation value.
Its location between major geographical regions allows species from different ecological zones to coexist within a relatively compact area. The dramatic changes in elevation also create numerous habitats ranging from forest ecosystems to alpine environments.
For researchers, Gongga Mountain provides an important natural setting for studying mountain ecology, biodiversity, glaciers, climate and the relationship between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and surrounding regions.

Hailuogou Glacier
One of the most famous attractions associated with Mount Gongga is Hailuogou, or Hailuogou Glacier Valley.
Located at the foot of Mount Gongga, Hailuogou is renowned for its spectacular modern glacier, which extends to an unusually low elevation compared with many glaciers around the world.
The glacier flows down through a steep mountain valley, creating an impressive landscape of ice, snow and rugged rock.
The brilliant white and blue ice formations can resemble a magnificent natural palace. Glacial ice bridges, ice cliffs and other formations create a constantly changing landscape shaped by the movement of the glacier.

The Great Icefall
The Hailuogou Glacier Icefall is among the most spectacular features of the area.
The enormous icefall descends dramatically from the higher slopes, forming towering walls and cascades of ice. Its immense scale provides a striking contrast with the surrounding forests and mountains.
Standing near the glacier, visitors can experience the extraordinary contrast between the frozen landscape of the high mountains and the relatively mild environment of the lower valley.

Glacier and Hot Spring: A Remarkable Natural Contrast
Another unusual feature of the Hailuogou area is the presence of hot springs near the glacier.
Some geothermal springs reach temperatures of around 90°C, creating steaming pools and waterfalls in the mountain environment.
The contrast between the freezing glacier and naturally heated spring water is one of the most fascinating geological phenomena in the region.
Within a relatively short distance, visitors can encounter snow-covered peaks, ancient forests, flowing glaciers and steaming hot springs—a remarkable demonstration of the geological forces shaping Mount Gongga.

A Paradise for Nature and Outdoor Lovers
Gongga Mountain offers a wide range of experiences for travelers. The dramatic scenery is ideal for photography, while the surrounding mountains and valleys provide opportunities for hiking, sightseeing and exploring alpine landscapes.
The Hailuogou area is particularly attractive for visitors who want to experience glaciers without undertaking a highly technical mountaineering expedition.
For those interested in biodiversity, the reserve also provides an opportunity to appreciate the remarkable changes in vegetation and wildlife that occur along the mountain’s enormous elevation range.

Discover Mount Gongga
With its 7,556-meter snow-covered summit, spectacular glaciers, alpine forests, rare wildlife, hot springs and dramatic valleys, Gongga Mountain Nature Reserve is one of the most impressive natural destinations in Sichuan.
The combination of extreme altitude and extraordinary biodiversity makes the region particularly valuable not only as a tourist destination but also as an important center for conservation and scientific research.
From the forests and hot springs of the lower valleys to the glaciers and permanent snow of the high mountains, Gongga Mountain reveals the extraordinary diversity of Sichuan’s landscapes in a single spectacular destination.
