2-Day Lanzhou, Tianshui & Maijishan Grottoes Tour
D1: Lanzhou – Tianshui – Maijishan Grottoes
Overnight: Tianshui
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Your local guide will meet you in Lanzhou and accompany you to the railway station for a train journey to Tianshui. Upon arrival, continue to the spectacular Maijishan Grottoes, one of China’s most important Buddhist grotto complexes.
Known for its distinctive appearance, Maijishan Mountain resembles a stack of wheat straw, which gave the mountain its name — “Maiji,” meaning “wheat stack” in Chinese. The grottoes are carved into the steep cliffs of the mountain, creating a remarkable combination of Buddhist art, architecture and natural scenery.
The Maijishan Scenic Area covers a large mountainous landscape and includes Maijishan Mountain, Immortal Cliff, Shimen, Qu Creek and Jieting Ancient Town. Among these attractions, the Maijishan Grottoes are the highlight, featuring hundreds of caves and thousands of Buddhist sculptures and murals dating from different historical periods.
In 2014, the Maijishan Grottoes were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor. This recognition reflects the site’s important role in the cultural and artistic exchanges that took place along the ancient Silk Road.
Spend the afternoon exploring the grottoes and surrounding mountain scenery with your guide. After sightseeing, transfer to your hotel in Tianshui for check-in and rest.
