Wufengxi Old Town
Wufengxi Old Town is one of the best-preserved ancient towns in Chengdu. Located in Jintang County of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, it lies beside the Longquan Mountains to the west and the Tuojiang River to the east. As an important water transportation wharf in eastern Sichuan throughout history, Wufengxi was developed during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. Among the famous ancient towns around Chengdu, it is the only one built on a mountain.
Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, Wufengxi Ancient Town sits along the hillside with lush green mountains and clear waters. From a distance, the terrain resembles a phoenix spreading its wings or soaring into the sky, giving the town its name, which means “Five Phoenixes Creek.” The town consists of five traditional streets: Jinfeng Street, Yufeng Street, Qingfeng Street, Baifeng Street, and Xiaofeng Street. The streets follow the natural landscape and preserve the unique layout of a traditional mountain town. The Huang River flows through the town before joining the Tuojiang River, creating a picturesque environment of mountains, rivers, and ancient architecture.
History and Culture of Wufengxi Old Town
Historically, Wufengxi was an important commercial and transportation route connecting Chengdu and Chongqing. As a busy river port, it attracted immigrants from Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei, Shaanxi, Jiangxi, and other regions. These immigrants lived together with local residents and gradually created a unique cultural landscape combining immigrant culture, religious traditions, dock culture, and local customs.
Many historic guild halls and temples were built here, including Guansheng Palace and Nanhua Palace. Different beliefs and traditions, such as worship of Guandi, the God of Wealth, the Fire God, and other folk deities, were introduced and integrated into local life. This cultural diversity made Wufengxi an excellent example of the interaction between different regional cultures in Sichuan.
Wufengxi was also the hometown of He Lin, a renowned Chinese philosopher whose ideas played an important role in modern Chinese philosophy.
Food Culture of Wufengxi
The saying “different lands create different flavors” is especially true in Wufengxi. As an ancient trading port, the town absorbed culinary traditions from various immigrant groups. The combination of local Sichuan flavors and immigrant cooking styles created a distinctive food culture. Visitors can experience traditional dishes with strong regional characteristics while exploring the historic streets and riverside scenery.
