The People Park in Chengdu
Chengdu People’s Park, located at No. 20 General Street, Qingyang District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, is one of the most historic and culturally significant urban parks in Chengdu. Established in 1911, it was the first public park in Chengdu and is also among the earliest modern parks in China.
Originally known as Shaocheng Park, the park takes its name from Shaocheng (“Small City”), an area that existed during the Qing Dynasty. At that time, Chengdu was divided into Dacheng (Big City) and Shaocheng (Small City). The Shaocheng area was built as a residential district for Manchu and Mongolian families and soldiers.
In 1911, General Yukun of Chengdu established the park on General Street to help improve the living conditions of local residents. Small businesses were allowed inside the park, and visitors could enter by purchasing tickets. Since then, Shaocheng Park became an important public space and marked the beginning of Chengdu’s modern park culture.
