Zhouzhuang Water Town
Located approximately one hour from Shanghai, Zhouzhuang Water Town is one of the most famous and best-preserved ancient water towns in China. The name “Zhouzhuang” literally means “Zhou’s Village.” According to local history, the town was named after Zhou Digong, a devoted Buddhist believer who lived during the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127).
In 1088, Zhou Digong donated approximately 13 hectares of land to the local Quanfu Temple as temple property. In recognition of his generosity and kindness, local residents began referring to the area as “Zhouzhuang,” meaning the village belonging to Zhou.
Over the centuries, Zhouzhuang developed around its waterways and became a typical example of the traditional Jiangnan lifestyle, where people built homes, streets, and bridges along rivers and canals.
