Nanjing Zhonghua Men City Gate
If you are planning to visit Nanjing, the historic Zhonghua Gate is one of the must-see attractions. Located on the southern section of the Nanjing City Wall, Zhonghua Gate is the largest and best-preserved ancient city gate complex in China. It is also an important historical landmark representing the architectural achievements and military defense systems of the Ming Dynasty.
Built during the reign of the Hongwu Emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), Zhonghua Gate was originally an important defensive structure of the ancient capital. The Ming Dynasty city wall once had 13 city gates, among which Zhonghua Gate was one of the most strategically significant.
History of Zhonghua Gate
The name of Zhonghua Gate has changed several times throughout history. Originally called the “South Gate” because of its location on the southern side of Nanjing’s city wall, it was later known as Jubaomen (Gathering Treasures Gate) during the Ming Dynasty.
In 1931, when the Republic of China government established Nanjing as its capital, the gate was officially renamed Zhonghua Gate, meaning the “Gate of China.” Since then, it has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Nanjing’s long history and cultural heritage.
Unique Structure and Ancient Defense Design
The Zhonghua Gate complex is an outstanding example of ancient Chinese military architecture. The gate consists of three inner courtyards connected by four arched gates, creating a highly sophisticated defensive system.
The entire complex measures approximately 118.5 meters from east to west and 128 meters from north to south. Each inner courtyard contains hidden spaces designed to store soldiers and military supplies, allowing troops to defend the city efficiently during wartime.
Each entrance was equipped with a traditional Qianjinzha (heavy gate), a large wooden and iron barrier that could be raised or lowered vertically to strengthen the city’s defense.
The ingenious layout of multiple gates, hidden chambers, and defensive structures made Zhonghua Gate one of the finest examples of ancient Chinese city gate engineering.

Having survived more than 600 years of history, Zhonghua Gate has endured countless changes brought by time and weather. Although many of its original wooden structures have been damaged, the impressive brick architecture and overall design remain remarkably well preserved.
