Zhaoxing Dong People Village
Located in Liping County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of southeast Guizhou Province, Zhaoxing Dong Village is one of the largest and most famous Dong ethnic villages in China. Known as the “No. 1 Dong Village in Liping,” Zhaoxing is an ideal destination for travelers seeking authentic ethnic culture, traditional architecture, and rural landscapes.
Covering an area of about 180,000 square meters, the village is home to more than 800 households and over 4,000 residents. Surrounded by green mountains and built in a natural basin, Zhaoxing Dong Village features a peaceful landscape with a small river flowing through the center of the village.
The village is famous for its well-preserved traditional Dong wooden architecture. Rows of wooden stilted houses are built along the hillsides, creating a harmonious and picturesque layout. Most houses are constructed from Chinese fir wood and topped with distinctive blue-tile roofs, reflecting the wisdom and craftsmanship of the Dong people.
One of the most remarkable features of Zhaoxing is its five traditional drum towers, which are regarded as symbols of Dong culture. These magnificent structures are distributed among five naturally formed sections of the village, named Ren (Benevolence), Yi (Righteousness), Li (Courtesy), Zhi (Wisdom), and Xin (Faith), representing the five traditional virtues.
The drum towers are not only architectural landmarks but also important cultural centers for the Dong community. Historically, they served as gathering places where villagers discussed important affairs, organized festivals, enjoyed traditional performances, and strengthened community connections. Each drum tower houses a leather drum, which was beaten by respected village elders to call villagers together when important matters needed to be discussed.
Inside many drum towers, a fire burns throughout the year, creating a warm gathering space where locals share stories, play traditional musical instruments, and preserve their unique cultural traditions.
Visitors to Zhaoxing Dong Village can also experience Dong folk songs, traditional festivals, wooden architecture, and the peaceful lifestyle of one of Guizhou’s most fascinating ethnic communities. With its beautiful scenery and rich cultural heritage, Zhaoxing is one of the best places in southwest China to experience authentic Dong minority culture.
