Qingman Miao People Village

Traditional Indigo Dyeing Technique
Walking through Qingman Miao Village, visitors can see traditional indigo dye vats in many households. These large wooden vats are specially designed for dyeing cotton fabric and are an important part of Miao textile production.
The dye vats are usually made from cedar wood, measuring about 2.5 feet high and around 1 meter in diameter. Because the indigo dyeing process requires a long period of preparation, the vats are traditionally raised and maintained for extended use.
The process, known locally as “raising the vat,” can take about a month to complete for a single bolt of cloth. Through repeated dyeing and careful treatment, the cotton fabric develops the deep blue color characteristic of traditional Miao textiles.
